Yamaha Outboard Rigging Kit 703/CLS FAQs
What exactly is included in this rigging kit?
This is a comprehensive "plug-and-play" kit designed to modernise your helm. It includes:
-
- 703 Side-Mount Remote Control Box: The industry standard for single-engine mechanical outboards, featuring an integrated key switch and emergency stop.
- CL5 Colour Touchscreen Display: Yamaha’s latest 5-inch digital network gauge, providing crisp, clear data for fuel flow, engine vitals, and more.
- Wiring & Network Components: This typically includes the 10-pin main harness (usually 5m/16ft), a PBI (Power Supply) hub, and the necessary NMEA 2000® compatible bus wires to link the engine to the display.
Will this kit work with my current Yamaha outboard?
The 703 control is designed for Yamaha outboards with mechanical (cable) throttle and shift. The CL5 gauge requires the engine to be compatible with Yamaha’s Digital Network System (Command Link) and generally compatible with: Most fuel-injected (EFI) four-stroke models from F30 up to F150.
Important Check: Your engine must have a 10-pin connector for the control box and a 4-pin "device" plug for the digital data. If you’re unsure, just give us a ring with your engine serial number!
Can the 703 control box be mounted on either side of the boat?
Yes, it can. While it comes set up for right-hand (starboard) mounting as standard, the handle is reversible, allowing for port-side installation. However, do keep in mind that the trim switch orientation may feel slightly different if reversed.
What is the benefit of the CL5 gauge over the older round 6Y8 gauges?
The CL5 is a significant leap forward. It’s a slim, tablet-style touchscreen that can monitor up to five engines (though this kit is for a single setup). It’s much easier to read in direct sunlight, offers customisable data screens, and provides much more detailed fault code information if something ever goes wrong, saving you time and guesswork.
Do I need to buy control cables separately?
Yes. Because every boat requires a different length, throttle and shift cables are not included in the standard rigging kit. We highly recommend Yamaha Premium "Power Matched" cables for the smoothest operation, especially if you have tight bends in your cable routing.
Is this kit easy to install myself?
If you are comfortable with basic marine electrics and routing cables, it is straightforward. However, the CL5 gauge requires some initial configuration to "recognise" your specific engine model. As your authorised Yamaha dealer, we can pre-configure the gauge for you before dispatch, or our Brightlingsea workshop team can handle the full installation for peace of mind.
Does the control box include a kill cord?
Absolutely. Safety is paramount, and the 703 box comes with a genuine Yamaha emergency stop switch and a coiled lanyard (kill cord) included.
Morgan Marine Pro Tip: When installing the CL5 gauge, ensure you have enough clearance behind the console. While the screen is slim, the NMEA connectors require a few inches of depth to avoid pinching the wires.
