Yamaha Outboard Rigging Kit 6X9 FAQs
What exactly is "Digital Electronic Control" (DEC)?
Traditional outboards use stainless steel cables to physically pull the throttle and shift levers. Yamaha’s 6X9 DEC system replaces these with digital signals—essentially "drive-by-wire." This results in smooth, friction-free operation, no cable stretch over time, and instantaneous response. It makes docking and fine-throttle adjustments significantly easier.
Which Yamaha outboards are compatible with the 6X9 kit?
This kit is designed for Yamaha’s digital-compatible range. Generally, this covers the 2.8L F150 through to the XTO Offshore® V8 models. If your engine is a "Mechanical" version (using traditional cables), this kit won't be compatible without a digital conversion. If you're unsure, just send us your engine’s serial number and we can confirm compatibility for you.
Can I install the 6X9 kit myself?
While the kit features "plug-and-play" wiring harnesses, we highly recommend professional installation. Because it involves the critical steering and throttle systems of your boat, ensuring the digital calibration and "Neutral Hold" settings are correctly configured is vital for safety. As an authorised Yamaha dealer, Morgan Marine can handle the installation and commissioning for you.
What are the "Speed Control" and "Pattern Shift" features?
-
- The 6X9 control head includes dedicated buttons for advanced functions:
- Speed Control: Allows you to increase or decrease your trolling speed in 50 RPM increments with a simple button press.
- Pattern Shift: This is perfect for slow-speed trolling; it automatically shifts the engine in and out of gear to maintain a speed lower than what is possible at idle.
Does the kit include the start/stop ignition panel?
Yes, our standard 6X9 rigging kits include the modern, backlit push-button switch panels. These are much slimmer than traditional key-switch panels, saving you valuable dash space for your chartplotters and fishfinders.
Can I add a second station (Flybridge) later?
Absolutely. One of the best things about the 6X9 system is its scalability. Because it uses digital "buses" rather than physical cables, adding a second station is a matter of adding a second control head and a communication cable. There’s no need to route heavy mechanical cables up to a flybridge.
Is the 6X9 kit compatible with Helm Master® EX?
Yes. The 6X9 series is the foundation for Yamaha’s Helm Master® EX system. Installing this kit means your boat is "ready" for further upgrades, such as Yamaha’s Autopilot or the famous Joystick control for effortless docking.
What is "Neutral Hold"?
This is a very handy feature that allows you to increase the engine RPM while the boat remains in neutral. It’s perfect for warming up the engine on a cold morning or clearing the fuel system without the propeller turning.
