Yamaha F50 50HP Outboard Engine FAQs

  • What type of engine is the Yamaha F50? It is a 4-stroke, in-line 4-cylinder engine with a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) configuration and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).
  • What is the displacement and horsepower output? The engine has a 996 cm³ displacement and produces 36.8 kW (approximately 50 HP) at 5,500 rpm.
  • What is the full throttle operating range? The recommended full throttle operating range is between 5,000 and 6,000 RPM.
  • What is the recommended fuel and oil? Yamaha recommends using  Yamalube® 4M engine oil or an equivalent API Standard (SG, SH, SJ) SAE 10W-40 oil. Only use premium low-ethanol gasoline; E15 or E85 should not be used.
  • Does it have power trim and tilt?  Yes, many models come with a Wide Range Power Trim & Tilt system
  • How often should I service the engine After the initial break-in period, the engine should be serviced every 100 hours of use or annually, whichever comes first. More extensive maintenance is required at 300 and 500-hour intervals.
  • Can I start the engine out of the water? No, never run the engine out of the water without using "ear muffs" (an external lower-unit flushing adapter) to provide cooling water from a garden hose. Otherwise, you risk severe engine damage due to overheating.
  • How do I properly break in a new F50 outboard? The break-in process involves running the motor at varying speeds for the first 10 hours of operation, avoiding wide-open throttle for more than five continuous minutes.
  • Can I reset the hours of operation on the digital gauges? No, the total hours of operation displayed on the Yamaha Digital Network Gauges or Command Link® Tachometers cannot be reset as the data is received directly from the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
