Yamaha F225 225HP Outboard Engine

Yamaha F225 225HP Outboard Engine are a true powerhouse that redefines what a high-performance outboard can be. By taking the best of Yamaha’s engineering and stripping away unnecessary weight, this engine offers an incredible power-to-weight ratio that is perfect for UK boaters looking for crisp acceleration and reliable offshore performance. Whether you’re repowering a deep-V hull or fitting out a new weekend cruiser, the F225 delivers the "big-bore" displacement you need without the bulk.

Yamaha F225 225HP Outboard Engine Key Features

The Yamaha F225 is the pinnacle of modern marine technology. Built specifically for the demanding offshore environment, it features Yamaha's revolutionary plasma-fused sleeveless cylinders. This space-age process allows for a larger displacement (4.2 litres) while keeping the engine significantly lighter than traditional V6 outboards.

At the helm, you’ll experience the smoothest control imaginable. Our digital models are fully compatible with Yamaha’s Helm Master EX system, providing "drive-by-wire" precision for throttle and shifting. It isn't just about power; it’s about sophisticated, effortless boating that makes docking and low-speed manoeuvring completely stress-free.

  • Class-Leading Displacement & Light Weight Using plasma fusion technology, Yamaha has created a 4.2-litre V6 that is surprisingly light. This results in better fuel economy and a "hole shot" acceleration that you truly have to feel to believe.
  • Precision Control with Digital Electric Steering (DES) Say goodbye to messy hydraulic lines and pumps. Our F225 units support integrated DES, offering faster, more precise steering and a much cleaner bilge area.
  • Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust (TERE) Navigating tight marinas is now easier than ever. This clever system keeps exhaust bubbles away from the propeller when in reverse (under 2500rpm), giving you significantly better grip and control when backing up.
  • Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) This system advances and retards the angle of the intake camshaft to dramatically increase power and torque in the low- and mid-rpm ranges, perfect for getting onto the plane quickly even with a heavy load.
  • High-Output 70-Amp Alternator With more electronics on board than ever before—from GPS plotters to high-end sound systems—the F225’s 70-amp alternator ensures you have plenty of charging power to keep your batteries topped up.
  • Yamaha Customer Outboard Protection (Y-COP) Security is paramount. The optional Y-COP system allows you to immobilise your engine with a simple remote key fob, giving you peace of mind when your boat is moored.
  • TotalTilt™ Function Standard on newer models, a simple double-tap of the trim button allows for a complete tilt up or down, making it easy to protect your engine from the salt water when you're done for the day.

In Yamaha’s coding, NCB refers to the modern 4.2L V6 Offshore series with Digital Electronic Control (DEC). The final letters indicate the Shaft Length and Propeller Rotation, which are critical for matching your hull and ensuring correct handling in twin-engine setups.

Model Code Shaft Length Rotation Best Suited For...
F225 NCB X 25-inch (Extra Long) Right-Hand (Standard) Single engine installations on most 20-25ft deep-V hulls or RIBs.
F225 NCB U 30-inch (Ultra Long) Right-Hand (Standard) Larger vessels with high transoms or mounting brackets requiring extra reach.
F225 NCB LX 25-inch (Extra Long) Left-Hand (Counter) The port-side engine in a Twin Installation to balance torque and improve tracking.
F225 NCB LU 30-inch (Ultra Long) Left-Hand (Counter) The port-side engine for Twin Installations on very large offshore boats with 30" transoms.

Yamaha F225 225HP Outboard Engine FAQs

How does the 4.2L F225 differ from older V6 models?
The modern F225 uses Yamaha’s Plasma Fusion Technology rather than traditional steel cylinder sleeves. This makes the engine significantly lighter while actually increasing displacement to 4.2 litres. You get more "grunt" and better hole-shot acceleration without the heavy weight of older-generation outboards.

Can I use standard unleaded petrol in the UK?
Yes, the F225 is designed to run on standard unleaded petrol (minimum 87 octane, which is lower than the UK’s standard 95 RON). However, we strongly recommend using high-quality fuel and strictly avoiding any fuel with more than 10% Ethanol (E10). For the best long-term protection in a marine environment, many of our customers prefer using E5 premium unleaded where available.

What is the benefit of the 'NCB' Digital Electronic Control (DEC)?
The NCB designation means the engine uses "drive-by-wire" technology. Instead of stiff mechanical cables that can stretch or corrode, your throttle and shift signals are sent electronically. This results in incredibly smooth shifting, instant throttle response, and the ability to easily integrate with Yamaha’s Helm Master EX joystick system.

What is the "Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust" system?
One of the best features for docking in tight UK marinas! Traditionally, exhaust bubbles exit through the propeller hub, which can cause the prop to "lose its grip" in reverse. Yamaha’s TERE system redirects those bubbles above the anti-cavitation plate when you are in reverse (below 2500rpm), allowing the propeller to bite into "clean" water for much better control and stopping power.

Does this engine come with a warranty for UK buyers?
When you purchase and have your engine commissioned by an authorised dealer like Morgan Marine, you are eligible for Yamaha’s excellent warranty coverage. For leisure use, this typically includes a 5-year limited warranty (3 years factory + 2 years extended), provided the engine is serviced according to the official schedule by an authorised Yamaha dealer.

How often does the F225 need servicing?
To keep your warranty valid and your engine in peak condition, Yamaha prescribes a "break-in" service after the first 20 hours of use. Following that, regular servicing is required every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first. This includes changing the engine oil, gear lube, and inspecting the internal anodes.

Can I fit the F225 to my existing boat without changing the steering?
If your boat currently has a 25-inch or 30-inch transom and can handle a V6, the F225 is an excellent repower candidate. Because it is so light for its class, it often fits where older, heavier engines once sat. If you choose the DEC (Digital) version, we would typically upgrade your helm to the digital controls to take full advantage of the engine's features.

What is 'TotalTilt™' and do I need it?
TotalTilt™ is a fantastic convenience feature. With a simple double-tap of the trim button, the engine will automatically tilt fully up or fully down. This makes it much easier to clear the water when you're finished for the day or to prepare the boat for trailering without having to hold the button down.

Is the F225 compatible with the Yamaha Y-COP security system?
Yes! We can fit the Yamaha Customer Outboard Protection (Y-COP) system to your F225. It allows you to immobilise the engine using a simple remote key fob, much like a modern car, ensuring that your investment is safe when left on the mooring.

How do I choose the right propeller for my boat?
Propeller selection is vital for performance. The F225 is often paired with the Saltwater Series II™ propellers, which feature Yamaha’s Shift Dampener System (SDS). This system virtually eliminates the "clunk" sound when shifting into gear. Our team at Morgan Marine will help you select the exact pitch and diameter to suit your specific boat’s weight and usage.
