Yamaha F175 V Max 175HP Outboard Engine

Yamaha F175 V Max 175HP Outboard Engine isn't just an outboard; it’s a "zero-compromise" powerhouse designed for those who demand blistering performance without the weight or bulk of a larger V6. Whether you are looking to repower a fast fishing rig or a high-performance RIB, the F175 V MAX SHO is engineered to dominate the water.

Yamaha F175 V Max 175HP Outboard Engine Key Features

  • Power Without the Weight: at the heart of this engine is Yamaha’s advanced 2.8-litre, 16-valve, 4-cylinder DOHC powerhead. By using innovative materials and a compact design, Yamaha has achieved an incredible power-to-weight ratio. At just 227kg, it delivers the kind of "out-of-the-hole" acceleration usually reserved for two-strokes, but with the smooth, quiet, and fuel-efficient refinement you only get from a Yamaha four-stroke.
  • Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT): This clever bit of engineering adjusts the air intake and exhaust timing to give you massive torque in the low and mid-ranges. The result? Instant throttle response and a punchy top speed that will truly get your heart pumping.
  • High-Output 50A Alternator: We know modern boats are packed with electronics from large-screen plotters to high-end audio systems. The F175 features a 3-phase alternator that provides plenty of juice, even at trolling speeds, ensuring your batteries stay topped up all day long.
  • The Signature V MAX Look: You’ll certainly stand out in the marina. The streamlined cowling features the iconic V MAX SHO black-and-red graphics—a design that whispers "performance" even before you’ve touched the starter.
  • Variable Trolling RPM: For the anglers among us, this system allows you to fine-tune your speed in 50 RPM increments, giving you absolute precision when it matters most.

Reliability You Can Trust
At Morgan Marine, we only recommend products we trust. The F175 is built on Yamaha’s proven four-stroke architecture, featuring Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for turn-key starts every time and Transistor Controlled Ignition (TCI) for rock-solid reliability in the harsh UK marine environment.

Yamaha F175 V Max 175HP Outboard Engine FAQs

What is the difference between the standard F175 and the V MAX SHO version?
While both share the same 2.8-litre block, the V MAX SHO is "breathed on" for higher performance. It features Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT), which significantly boosts low-end and mid-range torque. Essentially, the V MAX is designed for a faster "hole shot" (getting the boat on plane quickly) and a higher top speed, making it the choice for sports boats and performance RIBs.

How much fuel does the F175 V MAX SHO use?
Yamaha’s EFI system makes this remarkably efficient for its power. While fuel burn depends heavily on your boat's weight and hull shape, typical consumption for this unit at a cruising speed (approx. 3,500–4,000 RPM) is around 19–26 litres per hour. At Wide Open Throttle (WOT), you can expect it to draw closer to 60 litres per hour.

What is the warranty period for a new engine?
For leisure users in the UK, Yamaha offers a fantastic 5-year warranty (3 years factory warranty plus a 2-year extended warranty), provided the engine is serviced according to the official schedule by an authorised dealer like Morgan Marine. For commercial users, the warranty is typically 2 years.

How often does the engine need servicing?
To keep your warranty valid and your engine reliable, Yamaha prescribes the following:

First Service: At 20 hours or 3 months (the "break-in" service).

Routine Service: Every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first.

Major Service: Every 300 hours or 3 years (includes water pump impeller replacement).

Can I use E10 petrol in this engine?
Yes, the F175 is compatible with E10 petrol (up to 10% ethanol). However, here at the boatyard, we strongly recommend using a Yamaha 10-micron fuel/water separating filter in your fuel line. Marine environments are prone to moisture, and ethanol-blend fuels can attract water, which the filter will catch before it reaches your engine.

Does it come with "Drive-by-Wire" (Digital) controls?
The standard VF175 (V MAX SHO) is designed with mechanical controls, which makes it an excellent and cost-effective choice for repowering older boats without needing to overhaul all your wiring. However, if you are looking for the "Digital Electronic Control" (DEC) experience, ask us about the F175 XCA models.

Is it salt-water rated?
Absolutely. Despite the "SHO" (Super High Output) racing pedigree, these engines are built with Yamaha’s YDC-30 aluminium alloy and multiple sacrificial anodes. They are designed specifically to withstand the harsh conditions of the North Sea and the Blackwater Estuary.
