Sleipner SE30 12 Volt Tunnel Stern Thruster Kit
Sleipner SE30 12 Volt Tunnel Stern Thruster Kit are the ultimate solution for owners of vessels between 20ft and 28ft (6m – 8.5m).
The SE30 is a compact yet remarkably powerful unit, delivering up to 40kg of thrust. Designed with Sleipner’s world-leading "Side-Power" technology, this kit provides everything you need to transform your docking experience, giving you the confidence to nudge your boat into position with precision and ease. Its "Plug & Play" design ensures a straightforward installation, while the legendary Sleipner build quality guarantees reliability season after season.
Sleipner SE30 12 Volt Tunnel Stern Thruster Kit Key Features
- Exceptional Thrust in a Compact Frame: Despite its small footprint, the SE30 provides a substantial 30kg of thrust at 10.5V (standard operating voltage), peaking at 40kg at 12V.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Featuring Sleipner’s patented Q-PROP™ 5-bladed skew propeller, this unit reduces noise by up to 75% compared to traditional models, ensuring your manoeuvres remain as discreet as they are effective.
- Intelligent Power Control (IPC): Safety is paramount. The IPC system monitors solenoid functions and provides a minimal delay between drive directions to reduce mechanical wear and prevent accidental solenoid lock-in.Sealed Drive Lubrication: The gearleg is pre-filled and hermetically sealed for life. This means zero maintenance on the internal gears and total protection against water intrusion.
- Galvanic Separation: The immersed parts are galvanically isolated from the motor and electrical system, significantly reducing the risk of stray current corrosion.
- Flexible Installation: The motor bracket allows for installation at any angle, and the electric motor itself can be rotated on the bracket to fit into the most restricted stern compartments.

Sleipner SE30 12 Volt Tunnel Stern Thruster Kit FAQs
Is this the right size for my boat?
The SE30 is specifically designed for vessels between 20 and 28 feet (6–8 metres). It provides approximately 30kg of thrust at 10.5V, which is the standard power level you can expect under load. If your boat is particularly high-sided or you frequently boat in areas with very strong currents, do give us a ring—we might suggest stepping up to the SE40 to ensure you have that extra "grunt" when you need it.
Can I use Lithium batteries with the SE30?
This is a common question! Because the SE30 is a traditional On/Off DC thruster, you must be cautious with Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries. Lithium batteries maintain a much higher voltage under load than lead-acid or AGM batteries. This can cause the motor to spin faster than designed, leading to potential overheating or premature wear.
Our Advice: We recommend a dedicated high-quality AGM or Lead-Acid battery (minimum 200 CCA DIN / 380 CCA SAE) for this specific model to ensure long-term reliability and to stay within warranty guidelines.
What makes Sleipner better than other brands?
Sleipner (formerly Side-Power) is the "gold standard" in the marine industry for a few reasons:
-
- Intelligent Power Control (IPC): This patented feature monitors the solenoids. If it detects a "lock-in" or a fault, it shuts the thruster down automatically to prevent damage or—more importantly—a "runaway" thruster.
- Q-Prop™: The 5-bladed skew propeller reduces noise by up to 75% in some cases, so you won’t wake up the whole marina every time you nudge the joystick.
- Sealed Drive Lubrication: The gearleg is pre-filled and sealed for life, meaning there’s no messy oil reservoir to check inside the boat.
Is it difficult to install on the transom?
The stern kit is designed for flexibility. The electric motor can be rotated 90 degrees on its bracket, which is a lifesaver if you have limited space near your fuel tanks or steering gear. The GRP stern tunnel is bolted directly to the transom. While many of our customers are competent DIY-ers, we always recommend a professional installation to ensure the tunnel is perfectly sealed and the electrical cables are sized correctly to avoid voltage drop.
How long can I run the thruster for?
Like all DC electric thrusters, the SE30 is designed for short bursts of manoeuvring. It has a duty cycle of roughly 2 to 3 minutes of total run time. If the motor gets too hot, it has a built-in thermal cut-off switch that will stop it until it cools down—a vital safety feature to prevent the motor from burning out.
What maintenance does it require?
Surprisingly little! You should:
-
- Check the zinc anode on the gearleg once a season and replace it if it’s more than half gone.
- Keep the propeller clear of growth (we recommend a light coating of specialised propeller anti-foul).
- Keep the battery terminals clean and tight.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. All Sleipner products come with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty. As your dealer, we are your first port of call should you ever have any technical issues or need spare parts like shear pins or new props.
