Sleipner SE40 12 Volt Tunnel Bow Thruster Kit
Sleipner SE40 12 Volt Tunnel Bow Thruster Kit are the ultimate "peace of mind" upgrade for owners of vessels between 26 and 34 feet. Compact yet punchy, it delivers professional-grade manoeuvrability without demanding excessive space or power.
The SE40 is more than just a motor; it’s a highly engineered system designed for the harsh marine environment. It features Sleipner’s patented Intelligent Power Control (IPC), which protects your thruster from operator error and mechanical wear by monitoring solenoid functions. If a solenoid should ever lock in, the system automatically stops the thruster—preventing damage and keeping you in control.
It also comes equipped with the Q-PROP™ 5-blade propeller. This "skew-back" design reduces noise by up to 75% in controlled tests, ensuring that your arrival at the dock is as quiet as it is smooth.
Sleipner SE40 12 Volt Tunnel Bow Thruster Kit Key Features
- High Performance: Delivers a powerful 40kg of thrust at 10.5V (standard battery level) and up to 48kg at 12V.
- Compact 125mm Tunnel: Designed specifically for smaller bows, making it an ideal fit where space is at a premium.
- Galvanic Isolation: The gear house is galvanically isolated from the motor, significantly reducing the risk of corrosion.
- Sealed Gear Leg: Pre-filled with lifetime lubrication and featuring a ceramic/carbon mechanical seal for ultimate protection against water intrusion.
- Flexible Installation: The motor can be mounted at any angle on the tunnel to fit the unique configuration of your hull.
- Safety First: Includes overheat protection and a delay-switch to prevent damage during rapid changes in drive direction.

Sleipner SE40 12 Volt Tunnel Bow Thruster Kit FAQs
Is the SE40 the right size for my boat?
The SE40 is specifically designed for boats between 26 and 34 feet (8m – 10.5m). It provides between 40kg and 48kg of thrust, depending on your battery voltage. If your boat is particularly high-sided or you often boat in heavy winds, this unit offers a significant power upgrade over the smaller SE30 without taking up extra space.
What makes the "Q-PROP™" different from standard propellers?
Sleipner’s 5-blade Q-PROP™ skew propellers are a bit of a game-changer. They are designed to reduce noise by up to 75% in controlled tests (and 20-40% in real-world installs). You get all that power without the "cavitation scream" often associated with older thrusters.
Can this be used as a stern thruster as well?
Absolutely. While most of our customers install it in the bow, the SE40 is versatile. To use it as a stern thruster, you’ll simply need a stern tunnel kit (sold separately) rather than the standard bow tunnel.
How much room do I need for installation?
One of the best features of the SE40 is its Flexible Installation. The motor can be mounted at any angle on the tunnel to clear hull obstructions, and the motor itself can be rotated 90° on its bracket.
-
- Tunnel Diameter: 125mm
- Unit Height: 263mm
- Minimum Water Depth: 125mm (from the top of the tunnel to the waterline)
What are the electrical requirements?
This is a 12V DC system. Because thrusters pull significant current, your battery setup is vital:
-
- Current Draw: Approx. 315A at nominal voltage.
- Minimum Battery Rating: 300 CCA (DIN) or 570 CCA (SAE).
- Recommended Fuse: ANL 250A.
What safety features are built-in?
Sleipner is known for their Intelligent Power Control (IPC). This patented system protects the unit from operator error (like switching directions too quickly) and monitors the solenoids. If a solenoid should ever "lock-in," the thruster stops automatically. It also features Overheat Protection to prevent the motor from burning out during heavy use.
Does the gearleg require regular oil changes?
No. The SE40 features a Sealed Drive Lubrication system. The gearleg is pre-filled with special oil for life and sealed with a high-grade ceramic/carbon mechanical seal. Aside from changing the zinc anodes and keeping the propeller clear, it’s remarkably low-maintenance.
What is included in the Box?
When you buy the complete kit from us, we ensure you have the core components to get moving:
-
- The SE40 Thruster Motor Unit.
- GRP Tunnel (usually 1.0m or 1.25m).
- Control Panel (Joystick or Touchpanel).
- Wiring Loom (Plug & Play).
- Fuse & Fuse Holder.
- Battery Disconnect Switch.
A Note on Galvanic Isolation
Unlike many cheaper alternatives, the SE40's gearleg is galvanically isolated from the motor. This means stray current from your electrical system won’t cause your thruster to corrode away while sitting in the marina—a must-have for peace of mind in UK salt waters!
