Raymarine Ray 90 VHF Black Box with AIS 700 Tx & Rx

Raymarine Ray 90 VHF Black Box with AIS 700 Tx & Rx is a professional-grade package which combines a powerful 25W VHF radio with a Class B AIS transceiver, ensuring you can communicate clearly and remain visible to other traffic in busy coastal waters. By moving the "brains" of the radio into a hidden black box, you reclaim valuable dashboard space while maintaining full, ergonomic control through the included handset and speaker.

The Raymarine Ray 90 is designed for the modern mariner who demands power and flexibility without the bulk of a traditional radio. The transceiver unit is cast in solid aluminium for maximum heat dissipation and vibration resistance, and can be mounted completely out of sight.

Included in this bundle is the AIS 700, a Class B Automatic Identification System (AIS) transceiver. Unlike "receive-only" systems, the AIS 700 not only shows you where other ships are but also broadcasts your boat’s position, course, and speed to surrounding vessels. This is a vital safety feature for navigating busy UK shipping lanes or night-time passages

Raymarine Ray 90 VHF Black Box with AIS 700 Tx & Rx Key Features

  • Space-Saving Black Box Design: The main VHF unit hides behind the scenes, leaving you with only the compact RayMic handset and speaker at the helm.
  • Full Transmit & Receive AIS: The AIS 700 uses the latest SO-TDMA technology for faster updates and longer range, helping you "see and be seen" on your multifunction display.
  • Built-in Antenna Splitter: The AIS 700 includes an integrated splitter, allowing both your VHF radio and AIS to share a single existing antenna—simplifying your installation.
  • Expandable Multi-Station Control: The Ray 90 supports up to two wired handsets, allowing you to have full VHF control at both the helm and a secondary station (like a flybridge or nav station).
  • Loudhailer & Fog Signals: Built-in 30W audio output with two-way talkback and automatic fog signals (requires optional hailing horn).
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC): Class D DSC functionality with an integrated GPS receiver for quick and easy setup of emergency and safety calling features.
  • Ruggedised Construction: The transceiver is housed in a vibration-resistant aluminium chassis and the handset is backlit for easy viewing in all light conditions.
  • Seamless Integration: Fully compatible with NMEA2000, NMEA0183, and SeaTalkng for effortless connection to your Raymarine Axiom or other chartplotters.

Raymarine Ray 90 VHF Black Box with AIS 700 Tx & Rx FAQs

What exactly is a ‘Black Box’ VHF, and what are the benefits?

The "Black Box" design means the main radio unit (the transceiver) is mounted out of sight—perhaps behind the console or in a locker—rather than taking up valuable space on your dashboard. You control everything through the compact RayMic handset and the external speaker. This keeps your helm looking clean and uncluttered while giving you a full-featured, commercial-grade 25W VHF radio.

Does this system include AIS?

Yes, this specific package includes the Raymarine AIS700 Class B Transceiver. Unlike basic "receive-only" AIS units, the AIS700 is a "transceiver," meaning it allows you to see other vessels on your chartplotter and ensures they can see you. It uses the latest SO-TDMA technology for faster updates and better range, which is a significant safety boost in busy shipping lanes.

Do I need two separate antennas for the VHF and the AIS?

No. The AIS700 features a built-in antenna splitter. This allows both your Ray 90 VHF radio and the AIS700 transceiver to share a single existing VHF antenna. This simplifies installation significantly and avoids the need to drill extra holes or mount additional tall antennas on your mast or radar arch.

Is the GPS included, or do I need an external antenna?

The Ray 90 has an integrated GPS receiver. However, because the "black box" is often mounted deep inside the boat where a signal might be blocked, you may require an external antenna. The AIS700 unit in this kit comes with its own dedicated GNSS (GPS) antenna and a 10m cable to ensure it always has a clear view of the sky for accurate positioning.

Can I add more handsets to the system?

Absolutely. The Ray 90 is modular and supports up to two handsets. You can add a second wired RayMic in another location (like a flybridge or tuna tower), or even go wireless with an optional wireless handset and wireless hub. This gives you total flexibility to move around the deck while staying in communication.

Will it work with my existing Raymarine MFD (Axiom, etc.)?

Yes, it is designed for seamless integration. The system supports both NMEA 2000 (SeaTalkng) and NMEA 0183 networking. When connected to your Raymarine multifunction display, AIS targets will appear directly on your chart, and you can even initiate "Position Tracking" for up to five buddy boats, sharing their locations directly with your MFD.

Does it have a Loudhailer or Fog Signal function?

Yes. The Ray 90 has a built-in 30W audio output for a loudhailer. If you connect an optional hailing horn, you can communicate with people on deck or other nearby vessels. It also includes an automatic fog signal generator with pre-set patterns for power and sailing vessels, which is vital for safety when visibility drops.

Is the system waterproof?

The RayMic handsets and the passive speakers are rated to IPX6 and IPX7, meaning they are built to withstand the harshest British weather, including heavy rain, spray, and even temporary submersion. You can safely mount the handset and speaker in an exposed cockpit or on a flybridge.

What do I need to do regarding my MMSI number?

To use the DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and AIS features, you will need to program your vessel's MMSI number into the unit. If you don't have one, you can apply through Ofcom here in the UK. Once programmed, the Ray 90 can send a digital distress signal with your exact GPS coordinates at the touch of a button.

Morgan Marine Expert Tip: If you are fitting this to a particularly large vessel, don't forget to check if you need a RayMic extension cable. We stock 5m, 10m, and 15m versions to ensure you can reach every corner of your boat.
