Raymarine Evolution Hydraulic Pilot with p70Rs control head is a comprehensive, "ready-to-go" system designed specifically for mid-sized power vessels with hydraulic steering. Is this the right autopilot for my boat?

This specific EV-200 kit is designed for powerboats with hydraulic steering systems. The included 1.0 litre (Type 1) 12V pump is generally suitable for hydraulic steering rams with a capacity between 80cc and 230cc (4.9in³–14in³). If you aren't sure of your ram's capacity, our engineers can help you find this on your steering cylinder's identification plate.

What makes the "Evolution" system different from older autopilots?

Traditional autopilots often require a "seatrial calibration" where you have to drive in circles to teach the compass where North is. The Evolution system uses an EV-1 Sensor Core—a 9-axis sensor that monitors your boat's motion in all three dimensions. It’s essentially aerospace technology for your boat, meaning it "plugs and plays" with no complicated setup.

What is the benefit of the p70Rs Control Head over the standard p70s?

The 'R' in p70Rs stands for Rotary. While the 's' version uses buttons, the p70Rs features a rotary dial. For our motorboat customers, this is much more intuitive—you can use the dial for quick course changes or to "power steer" the boat manually via the pilot. It also features a 3.5" super-bright, optically bonded display that is easy to read even in direct Essex sunlight.

Does it require a Rudder Reference Unit?

Because of Raymarine’s Hydro-Balance™ technology, the EV-200 is remarkably good at sensing the rudder position without a physical reference unit in many applications. This compensates for any air or elasticity in your hydraulic lines. However, for the absolute best performance and to see your rudder angle on the display, we often recommend adding a rudder reference transducer, though the system is designed to work excellently without one.

Where can I mount the EV-1 Sensor Core?

Unlike old-fashioned fluxgate compasses, the EV-1 is solid-state and isn't restricted by traditional mounting rules. It can be mounted above or below deck, and even upside down or off the centre line. It is fully waterproof (IPX6/IPX7), so it’s built to handle the conditions we see out on the Blackwater.

Will this save me fuel?

Yes. Because the Evolution AI algorithms are constantly "evolving" and reacting to the sea state, the pilot makes much smaller, more precise corrections than a human helm. By keeping the boat on a straighter course and reducing "hunting" or snaking, you’ll reach your destination faster and use less fuel.

Can I control it from my Chartplotter?

Absolutely. If you have a Raymarine Axiom or an older a/c/e/gS Series MFD (Multi-Function Display), you can control the autopilot directly from your touchscreen. This kit uses SeaTalkng networking, making it easy to integrate with your existing electronics.
