Mariner F8 Outboard
Mariner F8 Outboard are engineered to punch well above its weight. Despite being one of the lightest outboards in its class, it’s packed with smart features that make life on the water effortless. The latest models now feature Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) technology, which is a total game-changer for small outboards—it means "turn-key" starting in all weather conditions and up to 27% better fuel economy than older carburator models.
What truly sets the F8 apart is the multi-function tiller handle. Unlike many competitors, Mariner puts everything in the palm of your hand: shifting, throttle control, steering, and stopping are all handled with one hand. It’s quiet, it’s smoke-free, and because it’s a Mariner, it’s built to withstand the harshest marine environments with world-class corrosion protection.
Mariner F8 Outboard Key Features
- Multi-Function Tiller Handle: Exclusive to the Mercury/Mariner range, this allows for one-handed operation of gear shifting, throttle, and steering—keeping your other hand free for the fishing rod or the painter.
- Battery-Free EFI: The manual-start EFI system doesn't require a heavy battery to run. Pull the cord, and the engine automatically powers the electrical system for a quick, reliable start every time.
- Shallow Water Drive: Features 5 trim positions plus a dedicated shallow water drive setting, allowing you to explore tucked-away creeks and navigate skinny water without worrying about your prop.
- Superior Portability: Weighing in at just 38kg, it features an integrated carrying handle designed for balanced, comfortable lifting from the car to the boat.
- Twin-cylinder overhead cam: design ensures whisper-quiet idling and incredibly low vibration, so you can actually hear the person sitting next to you.
- Automatic Reverse Hook: No more fumbling with levers when you need to back up; the automatic hook holds the engine in place while in reverse for safer manoeuvring.
- Peace of Mind Warranty: At Morgan Marine, we supply these with a 5-Year Manufacturer’s Warranty (for leisure use), backed by our expert PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) so it's ready to go the moment you receive it.

Mariner F8 Outboard FAQs
Is the Mariner F8 suitable for my boat?
The F8 is a versatile "all-rounder." It’s an ideal primary engine for small fishing boats, day boats, and larger inflatables. It is also a very popular choice as a "backup" or auxiliary engine for larger vessels. If you’re unsure, give us a call at the boatyard; we’ll need to know your boat's weight and transom height to give you the best advice.
What is the difference between the Short Shaft (MH) and Long Shaft (MLH) models?
This refers to the length of the engine's leg.
-
- Short Shaft (381mm): Typically for standard tenders and small inflatables.
- Long Shaft (508mm): For boats with a higher transom, such as small sailing yachts or larger day boats.
Getting this right is crucial for performance and cooling. If you measure from the top of your transom to the bottom of the hull, we can tell you exactly which one you need.
How heavy is the engine? Can I lift it on my own?
The F8 weighs in at approximately 38kg. While it is technically "portable," it is a twin-cylinder engine and significantly heavier than the single-cylinder F4 or F6 models. Most customers find it manageable for two people, or one person with a sturdy outboard trolley.
Does it come with a fuel tank?
Yes. Unlike the smaller portable range which has internal tanks, the F8 is supplied with an external 12-litre fuel tank and the necessary fuel line/primer bulb. This gives you much better range for longer days out on the water.
How easy is it to start?
Very easy. The F8 features an enhanced fuel primer and manual choke, which makes cold starts remarkably reliable. Because it’s a modern four-stroke, it’s also incredibly quiet at idle—you’ll sometimes have to check the tell-tale to make sure it’s even running!
What is the "Multi-Function Tiller Handle"?
This is a standout Mariner feature. It allows you to control shifting, stopping, and throttle all with one hand. It makes manoeuvring in tight marinas or coming alongside much safer and more intuitive than engines with a side-mounted gear lever.
Can I use the F8 in shallow water?
Absolutely. The engine has five trim positions plus a dedicated Shallow Water Drive setting. This allows you to tilt the engine up slightly to navigate over sandbanks or into shallow slips without damaging the propeller or losing cooling water flow.
Does the F8 charge my boat battery?
The manual start models come equipped with a 6-amp (76-watt) alternator. While it won't charge a flat battery instantly, it is designed to top up your battery while you're underway to power basic electronics like a fish finder or navigation lights.
What warranty comes with the engine?
When you buy from an authorised dealer like Morgan Marine, you benefit from Mariner’s 5-year leisure warranty (subject to annual servicing by an authorised dealer). For commercial users, the warranty is typically 2 years or 1000 hours.
How do I receive my engine?
We offer two main options:
-
- Click & Collect: Visit us at our Brightlingsea boatyard. We’ll perform a full PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection), run the engine in our test tank, and give you a full handover.
- UK Delivery: We can ship the engine directly to your door. We still perform the PDI before it leaves us, ensuring it’s ready to go as soon as you add oil and fuel.
What maintenance does it require?
To keep your warranty valid and your engine reliable, it should be serviced annually or every 100 hours. We stock all the genuine Mariner service kits, oils, and spares right here in our chandlery, or our workshop team can handle the servicing for you.
