Lewmar V6 Series Deck Unit - Gypsy Only FAQs
What exactly is included with the "Gypsy Only" Deck Unit?
This is a deck unit only component. It includes the 316 stainless steel housing, the main shaft, and the control arm. To have a fully functional windlass, you will need to separately purchase the motor gearbox (24V or Hydraulic), the gypsy (sized to your chain), and the electrical control kit (contactor, breaker, and switches).
What is the difference between the 'Gypsy Only' and 'Gypsy Drum' versions?
The "Gypsy Only" version (often called 'Low Profile') does not have a warping drum on top. It is designed for owners who only use chain and want a cleaner, lower look on the foredeck. The "Gypsy Drum" version includes an additional drum for independent hauling of ropes or secondary mooring lines.
How do I know if I need a Left-Hand or Right-Hand version?
This depends on your deck layout and where your chain locker is situated. If you are installing twin windlasses, you would typically have one of each. If you are unsure which orientation matches your existing setup or hawse pipe position, please contact our team at Morgan Marine for a consultation.
Can I use this unit with 12V power?
No, the V6 Series is a high-power unit designed for larger vessels. The electric motor gearboxes for the V6 are only available in 24V DC or Hydraulic configurations.
What size chain is this deck unit compatible with?
The V6 is a heavy-duty unit capable of handling 10mm, 12mm, or 14mm chain. Because the gypsy itself is sold separately, you can choose the specific gypsy that matches your chain’s calibration (e.g., DIN766 or ISO). For 14mm chain, we specifically recommend using the Remote Chain Pipe version of this deck unit for optimal performance.
Is this unit suitable for my boat size?
The Lewmar V6 is typically recommended for vessels between 17m and 26m (approx. 55ft – 85ft). However, suitability also depends on your vessel's displacement and windage. A good rule of thumb for the V6 is to ensure the total weight of your anchor and rode multiplied by two is less than the unit's maximum pull.
Does this windlass have a manual override?
Yes. The V6 features a manual chain release and a cone clutch, allowing you to deploy the anchor safely in the event of a power failure.
What maintenance is required for the stainless steel finish?
While the 316 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, we recommend rinsing the unit with fresh water after every trip to remove salt deposits. Periodically, the gypsy and clutch should be stripped, cleaned, and lightly greased with a marine-grade lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
