Lewmar V2 Series Kit - Gypsy Drum
Lewmar V2 Series Kit - Gypsy Drum are the pinnacle of vertical windlass development, blending a sleek, low-profile aesthetic with the rugged durability required for the toughest marine environments. At Morgan Marine, we highly recommend the V2 for power and sailboats between 35ft and 43ft (10m–13m).
Crafted from high-grade 316 stainless steel, the V2 isn't just about looks; it’s built to work. This specific kit features the Gypsy/Drum configuration, providing you with an independent warping drum for secondary lines or docking assistance, alongside a high-performance gypsy capable of handling both rope and chain.
Equipped with Lewmar’s innovative FastFit™ technology, installation is a breeze, allowing the motor and gearbox to be perfectly aligned by a single person. When you're looking for a windlass that offers smooth control, "fall-safe" security, and long-term peace of mind, the Lewmar V2 is the professional’s choice.
Lewmar V2 Series Kit - Gypsy Drum Key Features
- W.A.R.P. (Wear and Abrasion Resistant Pattern) Drum: The independent drum features a unique surface pattern that provides exceptional grip while reducing rope wear, making it ideal for warping or secondary mooring tasks.
- FastFit™ Installation: Our customers love this feature. It allows the motor/gearbox to be rotated and fixed in 45° increments, ensuring a perfect fit even in tight chain lockers, and making one-person installation possible.
- Cone Clutch System: Provides smooth, progressive control during anchoring, allowing for a "manual free-fall" when you need to deploy your hook quickly and accurately.
- Fall-Safe Anchor Lock: A vital safety feature that prevents accidental deployment of the anchor while the vessel is underway.
- Stainless Steel Deck Unit: The above-deck components are cast from 316 stainless steel for a beautiful, long-lasting finish that resists the harshest salt-water corrosion.
- Robust Worm Gearbox: Designed for high torque and reliability with minimal maintenance required.
- Rope-Chain Gypsy: Versatile enough to handle a variety of rodes, ensuring a seamless transition from rope to chain.

Lewmar V2 Series Kit - Gypsy Drum FAQs
Is the V2 suitable for my boat size?
The V2 is typically designed for boats ranging from 28ft to 48ft (approx. 8.5m to 14.5m). However, this depends on your displacement and where you usually anchor. If you're on the heavier end of that scale, feel free to give us a ring to double-check.
What is the difference between the "Gypsy Only" and "Gypsy/Drum" models?
The Gypsy/Drum version (this one!) features an independent capstan on top. This allows you to use the windlass for hauling a second warp or assisting with docking lines, whereas the "Gypsy Only" sits flush and only handles the primary anchor chain/rope.
Which chain size does the gypsy accept?
The standard V2 gypsy is designed to handle 8mm (5/16") DIN 766 short link chain. It is also a "combo" gypsy, meaning it can handle 14mm–16mm 3-strand or 8-plait rope spliced to the chain.
Do I need the 12V or 24V version?
Most leisure vessels in the UK operate on a 12V DC system. However, larger yachts may have a 24V ring main. You must match the windlass to your boat's battery voltage; if you aren't sure, check your existing battery bank or control panel.
Is the motor waterproof?
The deck unit is highly corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel. The motor gearbox beneath the deck is IP67 rated, but we always recommend ensuring your chain locker is well-ventilated and drained to prolong the unit's life.
How difficult is the installation?
If you are replacing an older Lewmar V-Series, the footprint is often very similar. If it’s a fresh install, you’ll need to cut a hole in the deck using the provided template. Because of the high current draw, we recommend having a qualified marine electrician handle the wiring.
What maintenance does it require?
Not much, luckily! We recommend rinsing the deck unit with fresh water after every trip to remove salt crystals. Once a year, it’s worth stripping the gypsy to grease the clutch cones with a bit of marine-grade grease.
