Lewmar Mini Maxi Wheel FAQs
What makes the Mini Maxi different from the standard Commodore wheel?
While the Commodore is a fantastic all-rounder, the Mini Maxi is specifically engineered for sailors who require a larger wheel diameter (up to 60 inches) or demand exceptional rigidity. It features a 10-spoke design (compared to the standard 5 or 8 on smaller models), which provides a more solid feel and reduces flex during heavy weather or high-load steering.
What sizes are available for the Mini Maxi range?
We supply the Mini Maxi in a comprehensive range of diameters to suit various cockpit layouts:
Metric: 914mm, 1016mm, 1066mm, 1219mm, 1321mm, 1372mm, and 1524mm.
Imperial: 36", 40", 42", 48", 52", 54", and 60".
Does the wheel come with a cover?
Yes, absolutely. Every Lewmar Mini Maxi wheel we supply comes as standard with a factory-fitted Hide Cover. This provides a premium grip and comfort for long stints at the helm. Additionally, the wheel includes spats (the leather covers where the spokes meet the rim) for a professional, finished look.
Will it fit my existing steering pedestal?
The Mini Maxi wheel is designed to fit the industry-standard 25mm (1 inch) tapered and keyed shaft. This makes it a direct "plug and play" upgrade for most Lewmar steering systems and many other major brands.
Note: If you have a very large custom yacht with a 30mm shaft, please contact us directly as these require a different hub specification.
Can I use a wheel brake with this model?
Yes, the Mini Maxi is compatible with Lewmar’s Through-Shaft Friction Brake. Because this wheel is part of the "twin rudder breed" of steering components, it typically uses the M10 thread brake spinner with the longer 100mm pin. If you're unsure which brake kit you need, just give the Morgan Marine team a ring.
Is the wheel disengageable for use with an autopilot?
While the standard wheel is fixed, Lewmar does offer a Multi-Tooth Wheel Disengagement Unit. This allows you to "freewheel" the steering when the autopilot is engaged, reducing wear and improving safety. This must be requested at the time of order as it cannot be easily retrofitted to a finished wheel.
How do I maintain the leather cover?
To keep the hide cover in top condition in the harsh UK marine environment, we recommend rinsing it with fresh water after use to remove salt crystals. Occasionally treating the leather with a specialist marine hide conditioner will keep it supple and prevent cracking from UV exposure.
