Lewmar EVO Race Plus Self Tailing Winch

Lewmar EVO Race Plus Self Tailing Winch are a high-performance marine winch designed for competitive sailors and performance cruisers who require significant weight savings and reliable operation. It uses advanced material choices to achieve weight reduction compared to standard EVO winches.

Lewmar EVO Race Plus Self Tailing Winch Key Features

  • Lightweight Construction: The primary feature of the Race Plus model is its weight-saving design, incorporating a lightweight cast aluminium base stem, machined aluminium upper stem, lightened main spindle, and composite bearing technology.
  • Self-Tailing Mechanism: It includes an integrated, investment-cast stainless steel feeder arm and wave spring jaws that automatically adapt to various line diameters to ensure secure and easy line handling, allowing for one-handed or short-handed operation.
  • Durable Materials: The winch features a tough, black hard-anodized aluminum drum with a needle-peened finish for excellent grip and resistance to corrosion and wear in harsh marine environments.
  • Easy Servicing: The design allows for "no tools" servicing; the top cap can be unscrewed by hand to access the gear train, simplifying maintenance.
  • Two-Speed Gearing: Most models (size 30 and above) are two-speed, offering efficient power ratios for trimming lines under load.
  • Aesthetics: The Race Plus models have a distinct look, featuring a carbon fiber inlay, a silver trim stripe, and white pad-printed decals for a sleeker, racier appearance.
  • Convertibility: Sizes 40 and above can be converted to electric power with an upgrade kit.
  • Warranty: Lewmar offers a comprehensive 7-year manufacturer's warranty on the EVO range.

Lewmar EVO Race Plus Self Tailing Winch FAQs

Is special equipment needed for servicing the winch?

No, servicing can be done with no tools required. The top cap can be unscrewed by hand to access the gear train for cleaning and maintenance.

How often should the winch be serviced?

For longevity, it is recommended to perform a full strip-down and service at least once per year.

What is the correct mounting angle for optimal rope entry?

For optimal performance, the rope should enter the drum at an angle of 5° to 10° relative to the base of the winch.

How should I clean an alloy winch drum?

Wash the drum regularly with fresh water and dry with a cloth. Do not use polishes or abrasives, as this can damage the finish.

Can the manual winch be converted to electric power later?

Yes, sizes 40 and above can be converted to electric or hydraulic operation using a conversion kit.

How does the self-tailing mechanism work?

The line is wrapped around the drum and then placed into the spring-loaded jaws of the feeder arm. As you use the winch handle, the jaws grip the line, allowing you to use both hands to crank the winch effectively.

How does a two-speed winch work?

You use the faster first gear for quick line retrieval by winding the handle in one direction. When the load increases and it becomes too difficult, you switch to the more powerful, slower second gear by winding the handle in the opposite direction.
