Lewmar EVO Hydraulic Self Tailing Winch FAQs
What size boat is the EVO Hydraulic Winch designed for?
The EVO Hydraulic series is typically specified for larger sailing craft, generally over 15 metres (50ft) in length. Because hydraulic systems offer immense power and the ability for continuous running, they are the preferred choice for heavy-duty cruising and larger displacement yachts where manual winching becomes impractical.
Can I still use a winch handle if I lose hydraulic power?
Absolutely. Every Lewmar EVO Hydraulic winch comes equipped with a manual override facility. You can simply insert a standard winch handle into the top of the winch and operate it manually, ensuring you are never left without control of your sails in the event of a power failure.
Does this winch require special tools for maintenance?
One of the best features of the EVO range is the "tool-free" servicing. You can unscrew the top cap by hand, which allows the drum to be lifted off for easy access to the gear train. This is a massive advantage when you are at sea and need to perform a quick clean or re-greasing without hunting for a toolkit.
What power source do I need to run these winches?
These winches are designed to be integrated into a hydraulic system, specifically powered by Lewmar’s Commander hydraulic packs. If you don't already have a hydraulic ring main on your boat, you will need to install a power pack. Our team at Morgan Marine can help you specify the right Commander unit to run multiple winches, windlasses, and even thrusters.
Are they noisy to operate?
Quite the opposite. Lewmar has engineered the EVO Hydraulic range for silent operation. Unlike electric winches, which can have a high-pitched motor whine, hydraulic motors provide smooth, quiet power—perfect for making sail adjustments during a night watch without waking the rest of the crew.
Which rope sizes are compatible with the EVO jaws?
The EVO winches feature Lewmar’s "Wave Spring" jaws. These are designed to grip a wide variety of rope diameters securely. While the exact range depends on the size of the winch (e.g., a Size 50 takes 8mm–14mm line), the spring-loaded design ensures that even thinner modern dyneema lines are held firmly without damage.
What finishes are available to match my deck?
We can supply the EVO Hydraulic winch in three distinct finishes: Black Alloy, Grey Alloy, and Polished Chrome Bronze. The alloy versions are hard-anodised for durability, while the chrome bronze offers a classic, premium look that is exceptionally resistant to the marine environment.
How do I install the winch?
The winch is typically secured using five M8 (5/16 in) countersunk head screws. It is vital that the rope enters the drum at an angle of 5° to 10° to the base to prevent overrides. If your deck profile doesn't allow for this, we can supply base wedges to ensure the perfect lead.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes, Lewmar is incredibly confident in the EVO range. They provide a 7-year warranty as standard on these winches, which can even be upgraded to a lifetime warranty for the original owner. This reflects the "Engineering Excellence" that goes into every winch.
Is this a stock item or made to order?
Due to the specialised nature of hydraulic systems and the various finish options, the EVO Hydraulic winches are typically Made to Order. This ensures your winch is built to the latest specifications. Please contact us at Morgan Marine for current lead times and to discuss your specific installation requirements.
