Lewmar EVO Electric Deck Unit

Lewmar EVO Electric Deck Unit are  the core component for an electric self-tailing winch system, providing push-button power for effortless sail control while retaining a manual override for traditional sailing. The deck unit is an evolution of the classic Lewmar Ocean winch range and is designed for easy installation and servicing

Lewmar EVO Electric Deck Unit Key Features

  • Push Button Operation: The primary function is electric operation, allowing the user to control the winch with a simple push of a button.
  • Manual Override: All models feature a manual override, which automatically disconnects the electric motor when a standard winch handle is inserted, ensuring safety and functionality in case of power loss.
  • Self-Tailing Design: The unit incorporates a self-tailing mechanism with "wave spring" jaws that automatically adapt to various line diameters, providing excellent grip.
  • Durable Construction: The deck units are typically made from marine-grade aluminium (available in grey, black, or chrome finishes) with a needle-peened drum finish for enhanced durability and strength.
  • Easy Servicing: Designed for convenience, the unit can be serviced easily without requiring any special tools.
  • Quiet Operation: The electric motor units are designed for quiet operation, minimizing noise on board.
  • Compatibility: The deck unit is a foundation for an electric winch installation and is designed to accept a separate motor/gearbox assembly, contactor, circuit breaker, and switch, allowing for flexible upgrades to existing manual winches (sizes 40 and above).
Control Options :
The complete electric winch system offers two levels of control, depending on the winch size:

E-Series Contactor: Supplied with sizes 40 to 50, this option includes a thermal trip to protect the motor from overheating. In case of an overload, the circuit breaker will trip and must be manually reset.

Electric Load Sensing (ELS) Control Box: Standard on sizes 55 and over (and an optional upgrade for sizes 40-50), the ELS control box automatically cuts power when the winch reaches its Working Load Limit (WLL), preventing damage to the system before the circuit breaker trips. The winch can be restarted by simply releasing and repressing the deck switch.

Lewmar EVO Electric Deck Unit FAQs

What is included in an "Electric Deck Unit"?

Typically refers to the winch drum and the internal electric drive unit. It does not include the motor, gearbox, or electrical controls unless specified as a "Complete Kit".

Complete Kit Requirements:

To function, the deck unit must be paired with a motor/gearbox, contactor (control box), circuit breaker, and deck switch.

Can I convert my existing manual EVO winch to electric?

Yes , Manual EVO winches from size 40 and above are designed for easy conversion.

Conversion Components: You will need a conversion kit that includes a new centre stem and a power drive base, plus the motor/gearbox and control electronics.

How do the electric speeds work?

Electric Mode: Operates as a single-speed unit. The winch starts at a fast speed and progressively slows as the load increases to maximize efficiency.

Manual Mode: Retains two gears for traditional sailing using a standard winch handle.

Manual Override: You can use a winch handle at any time; however, you should always remove the handle before using electric power for safety.

What are the different control options?

      • Standard control: featuring a thermal trip to prevent overheating.
      • Electric Load Sensing (ELS): An advanced option that cuts power when the winch reaches its Working Load Limit (WLL) to protect the rig and motor.

    What are the installation requirements?

Battery Location: Due to high current draw, winches should be placed as close to the main batteries as possible to minimize power loss in cables.

Deck Clearance: Ensure there is sufficient space below the deck for the motor and gearbox protrusion.

Waterproofing: All electrical connections should use waterproof connectors and marine-grade sealant.
