Lewmar CPX Windlass Kit FAQs

What is included in the CPX "Complete Kit"?

When you buy a complete kit from us, you aren't just getting the deck unit. The kit is designed to be "ready to install" and typically includes:

    • Deck Unit & Gypsy (sized to your chain)
    • Motor Gearbox
    • Contactor (Solenoid)
    • Circuit Breaker
    • Rocker Switch (for helm control)

How do I know which CPX model (CPX0 to CPX4) I need?

The right model depends on your boat's length and displacement. As a general guide:

    • CPX0: Ideal for boats up to 28ft (approx. 8.5m).
    • CPX1: Best for boats 30ft – 38ft (9m – 11.5m).
    • CPX2: Best for boats 38ft – 45ft (11.5m – 13.5m).
    • CPX3: Best for boats 45ft – 50ft (13.5m – 15m).

Pro Tip: If your boat is particularly heavy for its length or has high windage, we always recommend "sizing up" to ensure the motor isn't under constant strain.

What makes the CPX different from the Lewmar V-Series?

The CPX is approximately 15% lighter than a comparable all-stainless V-Series unit. It achieves this by using a hard-anodised aluminium base, while keeping the high-wear areas—like the gypsy cap and chain pipe—cast in 316 stainless steel. It also features a simplified architecture with fewer parts, making it easier for you to service.

Can I use the CPX with a rope/chain combination?

Yes. The CPX gypsies are designed to handle both. For the best performance, Lewmar recommends using windlass-grade, medium-lay nylon rope. The Gypsy is designed to provide a smooth transition between the rope and the chain lead.

Does it have a manual override?

Most CPX models feature a cone clutch for smooth, controlled "free-fall" deployment and include a manual recovery option. This ensures that if you ever have an electrical failure on board, you won't be stuck with your anchor deployed.

How much "fall" do I need in my chain locker?

This is the most common installation mistake! For a vertical windlass like the CPX, Lewmar recommends a minimum vertical fall of 305mm (12") for smaller units, but ideally 406mm (18") for the larger models. This is the distance between the underside of the deck and the top of the piled-up chain. Without enough fall, your chain will "clump" and jam the windlass.

Is the motor waterproof?

The CPX comes with an IP67-rated (or IP68 on request) motor gearbox. This means it is highly resistant to the damp, salty environment of a chain locker. However, we always suggest ensuring your locker is well-ventilated to prevent excessive condensation.

What maintenance does it require?

To keep your warranty valid and your windlass running smoothly, we recommend:

    • Rinsing with fresh water after every trip to remove salt deposits.
    • Greasing the drive shaft and gypsy components annually with marine-grade grease.
    • Checking electrical connections for corrosion and ensuring they are tight.

Still not sure which gypsy size matches your existing chain?

We can help you identify if you have DIN766 or ISO chain to ensure a perfect fit. Would you like me to send over the Lewmar Chain Selection Guide to help you verify your measurements?
