Lewmar Capstan Deck Unit Windlass FAQs

What exactly is a Capstan, and how does it differ from a standard Windlass?

While a standard windlass is designed to handle both chain and rope (usually for anchoring), a Capstan is a dedicated vertical warping winch designed specifically for rope. It’s the perfect tool for effortless docking, warping into tight berths, or hauling in heavy mooring lines. If you already have an anchor setup but need extra muscle for your lines, a Capstan is the ideal addition.

What is the benefit of the Lewmar WARP™ finish on the drum?

WARP stands for W.A.R.P (Wear and Abrasion Resistant Pattern). It’s a unique surface texture Lewmar applies to the drum that provides exceptional grip while being incredibly kind to your lines. In fact, it’s proven to reduce rope wear by up to 30% compared to traditional smooth or knurled drums, meaning your expensive mooring warps will last much longer.

Can I use the Capstan to break a stuck anchor?

We don’t recommend it. Capstans and their deck mountings are designed for horizontal pulling (warping and docking). They aren't designed to withstand the vertical "breakout" loads or the shock loads of a boat at anchor in a storm. Always use a dedicated bollard or cleat to secure your vessel once you’re moored.

How difficult is the installation?

Lewmar has made this surprisingly simple. The C3 model, for example, features an innovative design where the unit is fastened entirely from above deck. This can cut installation time by up to 35% as it often only requires one person to fit. For the larger C4, C5, and C6 models, you’ll need access below deck to secure the motor/gearbox, but the process remains very straightforward for any competent DIYer or boatyard.

Is there a safety brake?

Yes. The C-Series units are fitted with a robust worm gearbox. This design has inherent "anti-runback" characteristics, which essentially acts as a mechanical brake to prevent the drum from spinning backwards under load when the power is off.

Which power option should I choose: 12V, 24V, or Hydraulic?

    • 12V/24V Electric: Most common for leisure vessels. We always recommend 24V if your boat’s system supports it, as it’s more efficient and draws less current.
    • Hydraulic: Typically reserved for much larger yachts (up to 105ft) that already have a central hydraulic system for thrusters or stabilizers.

Morgan Marine Tip: Ensure you install the correct Lewmar circuit breaker to protect your motor and wiring from overload.

What maintenance does the unit require?

Being made of high-quality 316 Stainless Steel, the deck unit is very low maintenance. We suggest:

    • Monthly: Rinse with fresh water to remove salt deposits.
    • Annually: Strip and clean the drum, and check the oil levels in the gearbox.
    • Occasionally: Use a non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner to keep that mirror-polished finish looking brand new.

Can I operate the Capstan by myself?

Absolutely. The unit is designed to be used with a Lewmar Deck Footswitch. This allows you to keep both hands free to "tail" the rope (keeping tension on it) while your foot controls the power. It makes solo docking a much calmer experience!
