Honda BF20 HP Outboard Engine

Honda BF20 HP Outboard Engine are a portable, high-performance 4-stroke marine engine known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, quiet operation, and low emissions. It is suitable for a variety of small to medium-sized boats and is available with a range of control and shaft options

Honda BF20 HP Outboard Engine Key Features

  • Engine & Performance: The BF20 features a 350cc, OHC 2-cylinder, 4-valve engine that provides ample power and torque throughout the RPM range. The Programmed Ignition (PGM-IG) system optimizes the fuel-air mixture for easy starting (even from cold) and efficient performance.
  • Portability & Ease of Use: The engine is designed with portability in mind, featuring foldaway handles positioned at the balance point for easy carrying. It offers smooth shifting with a forward-mount shift lever and a soft-grip throttle handle with a twist-lock for effortless control.
  • Quiet and Smooth Operation: Honda's exclusive rubber mount system absorbs vibrations, contributing to a smooth and quiet ride, which is a major advantage over traditional two-stroke engines.
  • Durability and Protection: The engine features a comprehensive 4-Front Corrosion Protection system, which is a four-layer coating process that includes anodizing and an epoxy primer to protect against saltwater and UV rays.
  • Innovative Reverse Thrust: A unique reverse exhaust relief system directs exhaust bubbles away from the propeller in reverse, allowing the propeller to "grip" the water for instant response and better control.
  • Safety & Monitoring: Integrated alert systems monitor critical engine functions such as oil pressure, engine temperature, and over-revving, providing both visual and (on remote control models) audible warnings.
Available Variants:

The Honda BF20 HP Outboard Engine comes in several configurations to suit different needs:

Available in :

    • short (approx. 15 inches / 381 mm) and
    • long (approx. 20 inches / 508 mm) shaft versions.
  • Starting System: Options for either manual recoil start or electric start, often combined with manual recoil backup.
  • Control Type: Available with a tiller handle for direct control or remote control options which can be integrated with NMEA 2000 compatible on-board systems.
  • Trim & Tilt: Options for manual tilt (multiple stages) or power tilt for effortless engine-tilt operations and shallow-water running.
  • Power Thrust: An optional "Power Thrust" design is available, featuring a four-blade propeller and a low gear ratio to provide up to 60% more thrust in reverse and 15% more in forward, ideal for heavier vessels

Honda BF20 HP Outboard Engine FAQs

  • What is the recommended fuel type? Honda engines are designed and certified to run on regular unleaded gasoline.
  • Does the engine come with oil? No, the engines are shipped from the factory without engine oil. You must purchase and add engine oil separately before the first use. They do, however, contain gear oil.
  • What is the break-in procedure? The initial break-in period is 10 hours. During this time, gradually increase the engine load and speed to allow the internal components to wear in properly, as detailed in the owner's manual.
  • How often should I change the oil and perform service?
    • Every 6 months or 100 hours (whichever is first): Change the engine oil, check the starter rope, check/adjust spark plugs, and grease lubrication points.
    • Every year or 200 hours: Replace the spark plug and clean the fuel tank and filter.
    • Every 2 years or 400 hours: Replace the fuel filter.
  • How should I store the outboard motor for an extended period? Drain the fuel out of the motor if it will not be used for 30 days or more, as fuel spontaneously degrades. If laying the motor on its side for storage, drain the engine oil first, referring to the owner's manual for specific instructions.
  • How do I clean the engine after use in salt water? After each use in salt water, thoroughly clean and flush the outboard motor with fresh water to prevent corrosion
