Honda BF150 HP Outboard Engine

Honda BF150 HP Outboard Engine are a powerful and fuel-efficient 4-stroke, 4-cylinder engine that incorporates advanced racing technology like VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) for enhanced performance across the entire RPM range. It is known for its durability, advanced features, and low emissions.

Honda BF150 HP Outboard Engine Key Features

  • VTEC™ (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control): This technology, a first for marine outboards at its introduction, provides an optimal combination of power, torque, and fuel economy by adjusting valve timing and lift according to engine speed. It provides an extra boost at higher RPMs (around 4500 RPM).
  • BLAST™ (Boosted Low Speed Torque): This system enhances "hole shot" and acceleration by optimizing ignition timing to produce more torque at low RPMs, helping the boat plane faster.
  • PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection): This multi-port electronic fuel injection system ensures instant starts, smooth operation, and superior fuel efficiency.
  • ECOmo Lean Burn Control: At cruising speeds, the engine automatically adjusts the air-to-fuel mixture for maximum efficiency, further reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
  • iST (Intelligent Shift & Throttle) (Optional): Available on select models, this drive-by-wire system offers smooth and effortless control, as well as features like cruise control, automatic tilt, trolling control, and multi-engine synchronization for dual or quad setups.
  • 4-Front Corrosion Protection System: The engine is built with extensive corrosion resistance measures, including a four-layer paint process and improved gaskets and drainage, to ensure durability in saltwater environments.
  • High Output Alternator: The powerful 55-amp alternator provides ample charging power (40 amps for battery charging) for a wide range of on-board electronics and accessories.

Honda BF150 HP Outboard Engine FAQs

  • What innovative technologies does the BF150 include? The engine features Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™) (on BF150 models) for a broader torque curve. It also uses Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) to advance ignition timing for quicker acceleration, and ECOmo Lean Burn Control for improved fuel efficiency at cruising speeds.
  • What is the iST system? The optional Intelligent Shift and Throttle (iST) system provides a plug-and-play command system with features like trolling control (smooth running at low 50rpm speeds), cruise control, and speed/trim synchronization for multi-engine setups.
  • Does the engine have a safety system? Yes, models with iST include a protective immobilizer ignition system that ensures only the owner's remote ignition key can start the engine.
  • What is the general maintenance schedule? The fuel filter should be replaced every two years or 400 hours (whichever comes first). Regular maintenance includes checking the engine oil level, the cooling water check hole for free flow, battery connections, and the emergency stop switch.
  • What kind of battery should I use? You can use a car battery. For twin engine installations, a separate battery must be used for each outboard motor.
  • What should I do if the engine won't be used for a long time? Drain the fuel from the outboard motor if it will not be used for 30 days or more, as aged fuel can cause engine failures. It is also recommended to flush the cooling system and have the motor serviced by a dealer before long-term storage.
  • How should I transport the outboard motor? The engine is designed to be transported upright. If it must be laid on its side, you must follow specific transportation tips in the Owner's Manual, which usually involves draining the engine oil first to prevent it from leaking into the combustion chambers
