Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Standard Corepack

Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Standard Corepack is designed specifically for vessels equipped with modern electronic steering, providing industry-leading precision and peace of mind on the water. Whether you are navigating a powerboat through a swell or setting a course on a sailing yacht, this system brings commercial-grade technology to your fingertips.

This "Standard" corepack is the ideal solution for boats with SeaStar Optimus systems, Yanmar Marine ZT370 sterndrive electronic power steering, and ZF 2800 Pod drives. By integrating directly with your existing steer-by-wire setup, the Reactor 40 provides a smoother ride, reduces heading errors, and significantly lowers power consumption, allowing you to focus on the journey ahead.

The heart of this system is its solid-state 9-axis Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS). This advanced technology allows the autopilot to react to the sea in real-time, holding your course even when the boat is pitching and rolling in heavy conditions. Best of all, the flexible installation means the CCU can be mounted almost anywhere on board, in any orientation, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of hull types

Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Standard Corepack Key Features

  • Solid-State 9-axis AHRS: Enjoy superior heading accuracy and a more comfortable ride with a system that reacts to the water, not just a compass heading.
  • Flexible Installation: The advanced AHRS allows for mounting in nearly any orientation, simplifying the installation process in tight or awkward spaces.
  • Seamless Integration: Fully compatible with networked Garmin chartplotters, allowing you to control your autopilot from your helm or via a compatible Garmin smartwatch or remote.
  • Minimal Calibration: We know you want to be out on the water, not stuck at the dock. The Reactor 40 features an industry-leading commissioning process that is fast, easy, and intuitive.
  • Reacts to Sea Conditions: Remain confident even in rough weather; the system actively compensates for pitching and rolling to keep you on your desired path.
  • Advanced Features: Gain access to specialized powerboat and sailing features including heading hold, step turns, and—when paired with a wind sensor—wind hold and tack/jibe manoeuvres.
  • Auto Guidance+™ Ready: When used with a compatible Garmin chartplotter and Navionics+™ or Vision+™ charts, you can enjoy automated GPS path steering to your favourite waypoints.

Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Standard Corepack FAQs

What exactly is a ‘Steer-by-wire’ corepack?

Unlike traditional hydraulic or mechanical autopilots that physically move a pump or a cable, a Steer-by-wire system connects directly to your boat’s electronic steering system (CAN bus). It sends digital signals to your existing steering actuators. This results in a much cleaner installation with fewer moving parts and no need for a separate hydraulic pump.

Is my boat compatible with the ‘Standard’ Corepack?

The Standard Corepack is designed specifically for certain electronic steering systems. It provides robust autopilot capabilities for:

    • SeaStar Optimus systems
    • Yanmar Marine ZT 370 stern drive electronic power steering
    • ZF 2800 Pod drives
    • Viking VIPER systems

Note: If you have a Yamaha Helm Master or Volvo Penta system, Garmin produces specific versions of the Reactor 40 tailored for those gateways. Please contact us to ensure you order the correct SKU for your specific engine setup.

Does this corepack include the GHC 50 helm display?

The "Standard Corepack" is typically sold in two configurations. We usually stock the version without the GHC 50 display to save you money and dashboard space, as most modern Garmin Chartplotters allow you to control the autopilot directly from the screen. However, if you prefer a dedicated physical controller, the GHC 50 can be added to the system via the NMEA 2000 network.

What are the benefits of the 9-axis AHRS?

The heart of the Reactor 40 is its solid-state 9-axis Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS). Because it’s solid-state, you can mount the CCU (Course Computer Unit) almost anywhere on the boat and in any orientation. It reacts to the sea conditions—pitching and rolling—to ensure your boat stays on a steady course even in rough British waters.

Do I need a Garmin Chartplotter to use this?

Yes, if you are not using a dedicated GHC 50/20 helm control unit, you must have a compatible Garmin Chartplotter connected to the same NMEA 2000 network to perform the initial commissioning, calibration, and daily operation.

How difficult is the calibration process?

Garmin has made this incredibly straightforward. Unlike older systems that required complex circles at specific speeds, the Reactor 40 features a "Dockside Wizard" and a "Sea Trial Wizard." The system largely automates the calibration of the compass and motor drive, getting you out on the water much faster.

Can I control the autopilot away from the helm?

Absolutely. Because the system integrates with the Garmin ecosystem, you can control your steering via a compatible quatix multisport smartwatch or a dedicated Garmin Autopilot Remote. This is a fantastic feature for single-handed sailors or those fishing from the aft of the boat.

Does it support ‘Auto Guidance’?

Yes. When paired with a compatible Garmin chartplotter and a BlueChart g3 Vision or Garmin Navionics+ subscription, you can use Auto Guidance+. This technology searches through relevant charts to create a suggested path that avoids known shallow water, buoys, and other obstacles, which the Reactor 40 will then follow automatically.

Can I install this myself?

While the Steer-by-wire system is "plug-and-play" in terms of wiring, we highly recommend professional installation. As your dealer, Morgan Marine can ensure the NMEA 2000 backbone is correctly balanced and that the latest firmware is applied to all components for safety and performance.
