Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Core pack
Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Core pack is an advanced autopilot system designed for vessels with Volvo Penta Inboard Performance Systems (IPS) and sterndrive joystick systems, allowing control through a compatible Garmin chart plotter rather than a dedicated GHC display.
Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Core pack Key Features
- Dynamic Reaction: The autopilot actively reacts to sea conditions, such as pitching and rolling, to maintain the desired course smoothly and confidently.
- Integration with Chart plotters: Since the GHC instrument is not included, the system is designed to be fully controlled via a compatible networked Garmin chart plotter, providing a cleaner console without the need for a separate control unit.
- Powerboat and Sailing Features: When connected to a compatible chart plotter, the system offers versatile features for both powerboats and sailboats, including heading hold and step turns, and optional wind hold and tack/jibe (with a separate wind sensor).
- Auto Guidance+ Capability: With a compatible Garmin chart plotter and Blue Chart g2 Vision charts (sold separately), users can access optional features like Auto Guidance+, which automatically steers GPS paths.
- Minimal Calibration: The system is designed for fast and easy commissioning and calibration, getting you on the water quickly.

Garmin Reactor 40 Steer-by-wire Core pack FAQs
- Vessel Compatibility: This corepack is specifically designed for boats equipped with Volvo Penta Inboard Performance Systems (IPS) and sterndrive joystick systems.
- GHC Autopilot Instrument: The "Without GHC Autopilot Instrument" version of the core pack does not include a dedicated GHC display. You can control the autopilot using a compatible Garmin chartplotter instead. A GHC 50 instrument can be added separately to enhance the experience.
- Network Requirement: A NMEA 2000 network is required for the autopilot system to communicate with other navigation equipment on the boat.
- Third-Party Integration: The system can integrate with third-party chart plotters, but initial commissioning and use must be done through a GHC 20/GHC 50 or a compatible Garmin chart plotter.
- Mounting the CCU: The Course Computer Unit (CCU), which is the "brain" of the system, can be mounted in nearly any orientation due to its solid-state 9-axis Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS).
- Magnetic Interference: The CCU should not be installed within 60 cm (2 ft) of iron, magnets, high-current wires, or pumps to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Cable Lengths: The CCU cable is 3 m (9.5 ft) long and should not be cut. Extension cables are available if needed.
- Calibration: The system requires minimal commissioning and calibration, which is described as quick and easy.
- Control Options: In addition to a chart plotter or GHC instrument, the autopilot can be controlled from anywhere on the boat using a compatible Garmin device, such as the Reactor autopilot remote or a compatible quatix marine smartwatch (requires a compatible chart plotter or GHC 50 instrument).
- Shadow Drive Technology: The system includes patented Shadow Drive technology, which automatically disengages the autopilot when the helm is turned, giving you manual control.
