Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack with SmartPump v2

Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack with SmartPump v2 are quite simply the most responsive autopilot system we have ever offered.

This specific corepack is designed for those who want a clean, modern helm. By excluding the GHC 20 display, it allows you to control your entire autopilot system directly through your compatible Garmin networked chartplotter. It’s the perfect solution for saving dashboard space while maintaining complete, professional-grade control.

The "v2" SmartPump is a one-size-fits-most solution, meaning it’s compatible with the vast majority of hydraulically steered boats. You no longer have to guess which pump size matches your cylinder; the SmartPump v2 provides optimal control and confidence, featuring a brushless motor for increased reliability, longer life, and quieter operation.

Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack with SmartPump v2 Key Features

  • Solid-State 9-Axis AHRS: Our most advanced Attitude Heading Reference System allows the Reactor 40 to be mounted almost anywhere and in any orientation. It significantly reduces heading error, course deviation, and rudder movement, ensuring a smooth ride even in heavy seas.
  • Patented Shadow Drive™ Technology: Stay in command at all times. With Shadow Drive, the autopilot automatically disengages if you manually turn the helm, letting you manoeuvre quickly to avoid obstacles. Once you hold a steady course again, the system automatically re-engages.
  • SmartPump v2 Intelligence: The pump automatically adjusts the maximum flow rate for your specific boat (from 0 to 2.4 L per minute). Its brushless design offers better thermal performance and lower power consumption compared to traditional pumps.
  • Full Garmin Integration: Control everything from your Garmin MFD. Benefit from advanced features like Auto Guidance+ (requires compatible charts) to follow paths and avoid known hazards automatically.
  • Minimal Commissioning: We know you want to be on the water, not at the dock. The Reactor 40 series is famous for its quick and easy calibration process.
  • Built for the Elements: Engineered with corrosion-resistant components, including anodised aluminium and nickel-plated steel, to withstand the harsh British marine environment.

Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack with SmartPump v2 FAQs

What exactly is a "Corepack" and what else will I need?

In Garmin terms, a "Corepack" contains the brains and the brawn of the autopilot system. This package includes the Reactor 40 CCU (the brain), the ECU (the power), the SmartPump v2 (the brawn), and the Shadow Drive. Because this is the "Without GHC 20" version, you will need a compatible Garmin chartplotter already installed on your NMEA 2000 network to control the system.

Why would I choose the version without the GHC 20 display?

Many of our customers at Morgan Marine prefer a clean, uncluttered "glass bridge" look. If you have a modern Garmin GPSMAP or ECHOMAP UHD/Ultra series chartplotter, you can control the autopilot directly from your screen. Choosing this pack saves you money and dashboard space by removing the need for a dedicated standalone instrument display.

What is the "v2" in SmartPump v2?

The v2 is the latest evolution of Garmin’s intelligent pump. It features a brushless motor, which eliminates the risk of "motor burn-out," runs significantly quieter than traditional pumps, and is much more power-efficient—crucial for those long passages under sail or power.

Will the SmartPump v2 work with my boat's steering system?

The beauty of the SmartPump v2 is its versatility. It is designed to work with the vast majority of hydraulic steering cylinders found on boats from 20ft to 60ft. It automatically adjusts its flow rate (up to 2.4 L per minute) to match your specific cylinder size. If you’re unsure, give our team a call with your steering ram model number and we can double-check the volume for you.

Can I add a physical display later if I change my mind?

Absolutely. Because the system runs on a standard NMEA 2000 network, you can plug in a GHC 20 or the newer GHC 50 dedicated autopilot display at any time in the future.

Does this system support "Shadow Drive™"?

Yes, it does! The Shadow Drive valve is included in this pack. It’s one of our favourite features; it allows you to take manual control of the helm to avoid a lobster pot or another vessel without pressing any buttons. Once you hold a steady course again, the autopilot automatically takes back over.

How difficult is the commissioning process?

Garmin has made this incredibly straightforward. Once installed, the Reactor 40 uses a "Wizard" on your Garmin chartplotter to guide you through a series of turns in the water to calibrate the 9-axis AHRS. Unlike older systems, it doesn't require a complicated "dockside" setup.

Can the CCU (Course Computer Unit) be mounted upside down?

Yes. Thanks to the solid-state 9-axis AHRS technology, the CCU can be mounted almost anywhere and in almost any orientation. This is a huge advantage in the tight lockers or engine rooms we often see here at the marina.

Does Morgan Marine offer installation services?

We certainly do. While many competent DIYers install these systems, we recommend professional installation to ensure the hydraulic lines are correctly bled and the NMEA 2000 backbone is balanced. Contact our service department for a quote to have it fitted here at the yard.

What is the benefit of the "9-axis AHRS"?

Traditional autopilots can get "confused" when the boat pitches and rolls in heavy UK coastal chop. The 9-axis system reacts to the boat's motion in all directions, meaning it holds a much tighter course and uses less power because it isn't constantly "hunting" for the heading.

Can I use this for "Auto Guidance"?

Yes, if you have a compatible Garmin chartplotter and a Navionics+ or Vision+ cartography subscription, you can use the Auto Guidance+ feature. You simply pick a point on the map, and the autopilot will follow a suggested path that avoids shallow water and known hazards.
