Garmin GPSMAP 1223 Non-sonar with Worldwide Base map
Garmin GPSMAP 1223 Non-sonar with Worldwide Base map is the perfect choice for skippers looking for a powerful, large-format navigation hub that fits into a compact footprint without compromising on clarity or speed.
Whether you are upgrading your current dash or outfitting a new build, this non-sonar chartplotter offers a premium glass-bridge look and the fastest processing power in its class.
The Garmin GPSMAP 1223 is designed for the modern mariner who demands a sharper view and seamless integration. Featuring a stunning 12-inch high-resolution IPS display, this unit provides 50% more pixels than previous generations, ensuring your charts are crisp and readable even in direct midday sun.
Its slimline design and edge-to-edge glass allow for a clean, flush-mount finish, making it easier than ever to retrofit into existing console spaces. While this specific model is a dedicated non-sonar chartplotter, it remains fully network-capable, allowing you to add sonar modules, radar, and engine data as your needs evolve.

Morgan Marine Expert Tip: If you are looking to build a comprehensive marine network, the GPSMAP 1223 acts as a brilliant primary display. While it doesn't have built-in sonar, its dual Garmin Marine Network ports mean you can easily link it to a black-box sonar module or another GPSMAP unit to share data across your entire boat.
Garmin GPSMAP 1223 Non-sonar with Worldwide Base map FAQs
Does "Non-sonar" mean I can’t see depth or fish at all?
Not at all. While this specific unit doesn't have a built-in sonar module (meaning you can't plug a transducer directly into the back of it), it is fully network-capable. If you have a sonar "Black Box" (like a GSD™ or GCV™) or another "xsv" series Garmin unit on your network, the 1223 will display that sonar data beautifully on its high-resolution screen.
What does the "Worldwide Basemap" actually cover?
The preloaded Worldwide Basemap provides a general map of the world’s coastlines, major lakes, and rivers. However, for safe navigation in UK coastal waters, we highly recommend upgrading to Garmin Navionics+™ or Garmin Navionics Vision+™ charts. These provide the high-detail contours, port plans, and "Auto Guidance+" technology you’ll need for cruising.
How does the display perform in bright sunlight?
This is where the 1223 really shines. It features a high-resolution IPS (In-Plane Switching) display. Unlike older screens that wash out if you aren't looking at them straight-on, the IPS screen offers crisp, clear colours and 50% more pixels than previous generations. It’s easily readable even with polarised sunglasses.
Can I connect this to my engine?
Yes. With integrated J1939 connectivity, you can connect the plotter to various engines (including select Yamaha models) to monitor RPM, fuel flow, and engine health directly on your Garmin screen.
Is it easy to replace my old 10-inch or 12-inch plotter with this?
Garmin has designed this with a "slimline" footprint. Even though it’s a 12-inch screen, the edge-to-edge glass and thinner borders mean it often fits into the same space (or even a smaller footprint) than older 10-inch units. It supports both Bail mounting (on a bracket) and Flush mounting (sunken into the dash).
Will it work with my existing Garmin Radar or Autopilot?
Absolutely. It features two Garmin Marine Network ports and is fully NMEA 2000® and NMEA 0183 compatible. You can easily share radar, charts, and user data across multiple displays and control your autopilot or Fusion-Link™ audio system from the touchscreen.
I’m a sailor—are there specific features for me?
Yes, the 1223 includes Garmin SailAssist™. This provides a dedicated racing/sailing display showing laylines, enhanced wind rose, heading and course-over-ground lines, and even a race start-line timer.
Can I update the software myself?
Easily. The unit has built-in Wi-Fi® which pairs with the free ActiveCaptain® app on your smartphone. You can download software updates, purchase new charts, and even get smart notifications from your phone sent right to the plotter's screen while you're at the helm.
Morgan Marine Expert Tip: If you are looking to build a multi-screen system, the 1223 is the perfect "secondary" screen to pair with a 1223xsv. You get all the networking power and a massive 12-inch display without paying for a second sonar module you don't need!
