Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv - Without Transducer
Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv - Without Transducer are an advanced 12-inch all-in-one solution designed for cruisers, sailors, and racers who demand precision and reliability. This particular model is supplied without a transducer, making it the perfect choice for owners who already have compatible hardware or wish to customise their sonar setup with a specific transducer suited to their vessel.
The GPSMAP 1222xsv features a large, sunlight-readable 12-inch display paired with a traditional keypad interface. In rougher conditions, many of our customers prefer the tactile feedback of a physical keypad and the multifunction rotary control knob over a touchscreen, as it allows for precise navigation and setting adjustments even when the boat is in motion.
This unit is fully network-capable, supporting the Garmin Marine Network and NMEA 2000®, allowing you to seamlessly share sonar, maps, radar, and user data across multiple displays. With built-in high-sensitivity 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receivers, your position on the screen is updated 10 times per second, ensuring fluid movement and accurate waypointing.

Garmin GPSMAP 1222xsv - Without Transducer FAQs
What exactly does "Without Transducer" mean?
This version of the GPSMAP 1222xsv is the head unit only. While the device has powerful built-in sonar capabilities, it does not include the underwater sensor (transducer) in the box. This is ideal for boaters who are replacing an old unit and already have a compatible Garmin transducer installed, or for those who want to custom-select a specific transducer (such as a through-hull or transom-mount) that perfectly suits their hull and fishing style.
Does this unit have a touchscreen or buttons?
The GPSMAP 1222xsv features a keyed interface. It is designed with a large 12-inch sunlight-readable display and a high-quality rotary control knob and keypad. Many of our customers prefer this for offshore use, as it provides precise control even when wearing gloves or when the boat is pitching in rougher British waters.
What kind of sonar is built into this unit?
The "xsv" in the name indicates that sonar is built-in. This unit supports:
-
- 1 kW Traditional CHIRP sonar: For crystal-clear fish arches and target separation.
- ClearVü and SideVü scanning sonar: Giving you nearly photographic images of structure and fish below and to the sides of your boat.
- Panoptix™ & LiveScope™: It is fully compatible with Garmin’s "all-seeing" live sonar transducers (sold separately).
Can I connect this to my existing engine data and sensors?
Absolutely. The unit is fully NMEA 2000® and NMEA 0183 compatible. This allows you to view engine data, autopilot information, VHF radio alerts, and AIS targets directly on your 12-inch screen. It also features the Garmin Marine Network for sharing data (like charts and sonar) across multiple Garmin displays.
What maps come preloaded on the device?
The unit comes with a Worldwide Basemap. For detailed navigation around the UK and European coasts, we highly recommend pairing it with Garmin Navionics+™ or Garmin Navionics Vision+™ charts. These provide high-resolution depth contours, harbour detail, and Auto Guidance+ technology to help suggest the best path to your destination.
Does it have built-in Wi-Fi?
Yes. You can pair the 1222xsv with the free ActiveCaptain® app on your smartphone or tablet. This allows you to update software wirelessly, download new charts, and even receive smart notifications (calls and texts) on the plotter screen while your phone is tucked away safely in a dry locker.
Can I use this for sailing as well as motorboating?
Indeed. Garmin has integrated SailAssist™ features into this unit. It includes a pre-race guidance page that shows your virtual starting line, data fields for laylines, enhanced wind rose, and tide/current/time sliders—essential tools for anyone looking to get the most out of their time under sail.
How accurate is the GPS?
The unit features a high-sensitivity, internal 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receiver. This updates your position and heading 10 times per second, which means your movement on the screen is incredibly fluid and your mark on the map is exceptionally accurate, even at high speeds.
Can I create my own maps?
Yes. With the Quickdraw Contours feature, the device can create personalised HD fishing maps on-screen with 1-foot contours as you fish. You own the data; you can keep it private or share it with the Quickdraw Community on Garmin Connect™.
