Garmin GMR Fantom 12x, Top Assy, Pedestal

Garmin GMR Fantom 12x, Top Assy, Pedestal are the main component (or "Top Assy") of a high-powered, 120-watt solid-state open-array marine radar system, which features pulse compression and MotionScope technology for superior target detection. The antenna array itself is sold separately

Garmin GMR Fantom 12x, Top Assy, Pedestal Key Features

The GMR Fantom 12x pedestal is a robust, fixed-mount unit that houses the radar's electronics and motor system.
  • High-Powered Radar: Delivers 120 watts of power for a maximum range of up to data-complete="true" class="Yjhzub">96 nautical miles and a minimum range of 6 meters. This makes it suitable for both long-range weather tracking and close-range collision avoidance.
  • Solid-State Design: Utilizes pulse compression technology, which provides high-resolution imaging and excellent target identification without the warm-up time required by traditional magnetron radars.
  • MotionScope Technology: Uses the Doppler effect to detect and highlight moving targets in different colours on the chartplotter screen (moving towards you or away), which helps mariners easily identify potential collision threats or locate flocks of birds for fishing.
  • High Resolution: The pedestal is designed to be paired with a 4-foot (1.8-degree beamwidth) or 6-foot (1.25-degree beamwidth) open array antenna, providing high-resolution imagery and antenna gain to pick out even weak targets at a distance.
  • Dual Range and Overlay: Capable of providing split-screen images on a compatible Garmin chartplotter, showing both close- and long-range views simultaneously, with the ability to overlay radar images onto map pages.
  • Dynamic Adjustments: Features Dynamic Auto Gain and Dynamic Sea Filter, which automatically adjust levels and filter sea clutter for optimal performance in varying conditions.
  • Durability: The unit has an IPX6 water rating, making it highly resistant to strong jets of water and suitable for harsh marine conditions.
  • Tracking Features: Includes MARPA target tracking (tracks up to 30 targets, requires a heading sensor sold separately) and Auto Bird Gain to help locate feeding birds.
  • Included in the Box (Pedestal Only version): The pedestal unit itself, a mounting hardware kit and template, a 15-meter right-angle power cable, a 15-meter right-angle network cable, and documentation.

Garmin GMR Fantom 12x, Top Assy, Pedestal FAQs

    • Where should I mount the pedestal? The pedestal should be mounted high above the boat's horizontal spreaders and mast crosstrees to avoid interference. If mounting on a hard top, use a pedestal or riser to ensure the radar beam clears the edge, preventing reflections or absorption. The radar should be at least 1 m (40 in.) away from any other transmitting equipment or radio signal carrying cables. Maintain the compass-safe distance specified in the product documentation to prevent interference with a magnetic compass.
    • How do I install the antenna onto the pedestal? First, remove the protective cover from the pedestal's wave guide. Align the antenna wave guide with the pedestal wave guide and slide the antenna on. Secure it using the 8 mm hex bolts, flat washers, and spring washers, torqued to 70 lbf-in (6 lbf-ft).
    • What are the rotation speeds? The Garmin GMR Fantom 12x Pedestal
offers rotation speeds of 24 and 48 RPM.
      • The high speed (48 RPM) is only available in single range mode with MotionScope disabled, and on range settings of 12 NM or lower.
    • What is MotionScope technology? MotionScope technology uses the Doppler effect to detect and highlight moving targets in different colours on your chartplotter display, helping you navigate around other vessels or severe weather.
    • What is the maximum and minimum range? The radar has a maximum range of 96 nautical miles (NM) and a minimum range of 6 meters
