Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 Open Array Radar and Pedestal

Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 Open Array Radar and Pedestal are a powerful, 4-foot, 4kW open-array magnetron radar system designed for offshore mariners, offering high-definition imaging, long range (up to 72nm), and advanced features like scan averaging, true echo trails, and bird mode for superior weather, obstacle, and fish detection, providing exceptional clarity and performance for situational awareness in all conditions.

Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 Open Array Radar and Pedestal Key Features

  • High-Definition Imaging: Delivers clear, detailed images with narrow horizontal beamwidth and high antenna gain for better target separation.
  • Magnetron Power: Provides strong performance for offshore use, suitable for cruising and serious fishing.
  • Advanced Target Processing: Features ;scan averaging to filter noise and improve consistent target detection, expansion and angular target size processing ;for optimized object shapes.
  • True Echo Trails: Shows fading trails of moving vessels, removing boat motion for easier collision avoidance.
  • Bird Mode & Auto Bird Gain: Helps locate flocks of birds, indicating fish below the surface.
  • Dual Range: Split-screen display for viewing close and long-range targets simultaneously with independent controls.
  • Radar Overlay; Integrates radar images onto your chart plotter map for a combined view (requires compatible sensors).
  • Quiet & Robust: Features a low-noise drive motor and a 100-knot wind rating for reliable operation in harsh conditions.
  • MARPA Target Tracking : Track up to 30 targets for enhanced safety.

Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 Open Array Radar and Pedestal FAQs

  • What are the key features of the Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 ?
    • High-definition imaging for superior weather, obstacle, and traffic detection.
    • Scan Averaging Technology which filters out sea clutter and interference.
    • True Echo Trails that display a historical "trail" of moving targets to help identify collision threats quickly.
    • Auto Bird Gain to locate flocks of birds at the water's surface, indicating baitfish.
    • Dynamic Auto Gain which automatically adjusts levels for optimum settings in different water conditions (harbours, near shore, offshore).
    • Dual Range with Overlay capability to provide split-screen images with independent range settings, overlaid on a chart plotter's map screen.
    • 100-knot commercial-grade wind rating.
    • Quiet Open-Array Drive Motor.
  • What is the maximum and minimum range? The Garmin GMR 434 xHD3 has a maximum range of up to 72 nautical miles (on the 4 kW and 12 kW versions) and a minimum range of 20 meters.
  • Is MARPA target tracking supported? Yes, the radar supports MARPA target tracking (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid), but it requires a heading sensor (sold separately) for this functionality.
  • What's in the box? The standard package includes the GMR xHD3 4 kW open array radar  with a 4' antenna (or 6' depending on the model), a 15 m (49.21 ft) power cable, a 15 m (49.21 ft) network cable, mounting hardware kit, and installation instructions.
  • What are the power requirements?  The unit requires a power input of 11-32 V DCTypical power consumption while transmitting in normal mode is 55 W, and 18 W in standby.
  • Is it compatible with my existing Garmin chartplotter? The radar is designed to integrate seamlessly into a Garmin onboard system via NMEA 2000 networking. It is compatible with a wide range of Garmin chartplotters and MFDs, including GPSMAP® 7x2/9x2, 10x2/12x2, 7400/7600, and 8400/8600 series, using plug-and-play connectivity.
  • Where should the radar be mounted? The radar should be mounted at least 1 m (40 in.) away from any other transmitting equipment and 2 m (6.5 ft.) away from single side band (SSB) radios or the radar beam path of other electronics. It also needs to be mounted at a safe distance from a magnetic compass; the exact distance is listed in the product specifications.
