Garmin GMR 18 HD3 Radome
Garmin GMR 18 HD3 Radome are a compact and powerful radar solution designed specifically for mariners who demand high-definition performance without the bulk of an open-array system.
Whether you are navigating through a busy Solent channel in the mist or returning to moorings after dark, the GMR 18 HD3 provides the clarity and range you need to stay safe.
The Garmin GMR 18 HD3 is an 18-inch, 4 kW magnetron dome radar that strikes the perfect balance between ease of use and advanced scanning technology. Engineered to maximise your situational awareness, it delivers a 36-nautical mile detection range and exceptional close-in target definition—seeing objects as close as 20 metres from your vessel.
One of the standout improvements in this latest generation is its "fit and forget" intelligence. With Dynamic Auto Gain and Sea Filtering, the GMR 18 HD3 automatically adjusts to your surroundings, filtering out sea clutter and noise so you only see the targets that matter. This means less time fiddling with settings and more time focused on your course. For those looking for redundancy or multi-station setups, it also supports dual-radar configurations, allowing different displays on your boat to pull data simultaneously.
Compact, quiet, and incredibly reliable, the GMR 18 HD3 is the ideal upgrade for any coastal cruiser or offshore angler looking to complete their Garmin marine suite.

Garmin GMR 18 HD3 Radome FAQs
What are the main benefits of the GMR 18 HD3 compared to older models?
The GMR 18 HD3 is a 4kW high-definition magnetron radar that brings professional-grade scanning to a more accessible price point. It features improved target detection, 8-bit true colour for better separation, and a new quiet-drive motor. It’s designed to give you much clearer echo definition and better situational awareness, even in poor visibility.
What is the maximum range of this radar?
The GMR 18 HD3 offers a maximum detection range of 36 nautical miles. However, it is equally impressive at close range, with a minimum scanning distance of just 20 metres—perfect for navigating tight harbours or spotting nearby buoys in the fog.
How does ‘Dynamic Auto Gain’ and ‘Sea Filter’ work?
One of the best things about the HD3 is that you don’t need to be a radar expert to use it. Dynamic Auto Gain automatically adjusts the radar’s sensitivity to your surroundings, while the Dynamic Sea Filter automatically reduces the ‘clutter’ caused by waves and choppy water. This ensures you always have a clear picture on your screen without constantly fiddling with the settings.
What is MARPA, and do I need anything extra for it?
MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) allows you to select and track other vessels to help avoid collisions. It will show you a target’s speed, heading, and closest point of approach. Please note: To use MARPA (and the Radar Overlay feature on your charts), you will need a separate heading sensor or autopilot system connected to your network.
Is it compatible with my current Garmin Chartplotter?
The GMR 18 HD3 integrates seamlessly with the Garmin Marine Network. It is compatible with most modern GPSMAP series units (such as the 723, 923, 1223, and 8400 series). If you’re unsure if your specific MFD is compatible, just give us a call at Morgan Marine and we can check for you.
How quiet is the radar during operation?
Garmin has engineered the HD3 with a low-noise motor that spins at a fixed 24 RPM. It is significantly quieter than previous generations, which is a real plus if the radar is mounted on a hardtop or arch close to the cockpit.
What comes in the box?
When you buy from us, the GMR 18 HD3 comes as a complete kit to get you started:
-
- GMR 18 HD3 dome radar
- 15-metre power cable
- 15-metre Garmin Marine Network cable
- Mounting hardware kit and template
- Full installation instructions
Can I install this myself?
The installation is relatively straightforward for those comfortable with marine DIY. The radar connects via a single network cable to your plotter and a power cable to your battery source (11–32 V DC). However, for the best performance—especially regarding mounting height and angle—we recommend a professional installation or consulting our team for advice on your specific boat.
Is the GMR 18 HD3 waterproof?
Absolutely. It is rated to IPX7 standards, meaning it is built to withstand the typical British weather—from heavy rain and salt spray to the occasional wash-over in rougher seas.
Why should I choose a Radome over an Open Array radar?
Radomes like the GMR 18 HD3 are ideal for sailing yachts and smaller motorboats where space is at a premium. Because all the moving parts are enclosed, there’s no risk of the antenna getting snagged on rigging or lines, and the power consumption (40W while transmitting) is much lower than larger open-array systems.
