Garmin GMR 1226 xHD2 Open Array Radar and Pedestal

Garmin GMR 1226 xHD2 Open Array Radar and Pedestal are a 6-foot, 12 kW high-definition open-array radar system designed for serious seafarers on larger yachts and sport fishing boats. It delivers high-resolution imagery and a maximum detection range of up to 72 nautical miles (133 km).

Garmin GMR 1226 xHD2 Open Array Radar and Pedestal Key Features

  • Antenna: 6-foot (1.8 metre) open array with a narrow 1.1° horizontal beamwidth for superior target separation and detail.
  • Power Output: 12 kW transmit power.
  • Rotation Speeds: Dual rotation speeds of 24 and 48 RPM for fast scan updates.
  • Resolution: Features 8-bit true colour imagery to help distinguish between large and small targets while reducing clutter.
Advanced Radar Features
  • Bird Mode: Automatically adjusts sensitivity to locate flocks of birds at the water's surface, which often indicates the presence of baitfish.
  • Dual Range: Allows for a split-screen display showing both close-range and long-range radar returns simultaneously.
  • Dynamic Performance: Includes Dynamic Auto Gain and Dynamic Sea Filter, which automatically adjust to varying harbour, nearshore, or offshore conditions to provide optimal performance.
  • Safety & Tracking: Supports MARPA target tracking (up to 30 targets) and Echo Trails to identify moving threats and potential collision risks.
  • Radar Overlay: Can overlay radar images directly onto a compatible chart plotter's map.
Physical & Technical Details
  • Pedestal Mount: Designed for fixed installation with a pedestal weight of data-complete="true" class="Yjhzub">47.1 lbs (21.4 kg) and an array weight of 16.9 lbs (7.7 kg).
  • Durability: Rated IPX6 for water resistance against heavy seas and can withstand winds up to 80 knots.
  • Power Input: Compatible with 10–32V DC systems; a voltage converter is typically included for integration into 12V or 24V networks.
  • Acoustics: Rotates quietly at less than 58 dB SPL to minimize noise pollution.

Garmin GMR 1226 xHD2 Open Array Radar and Pedestal FAQs

    • Compatibility: The GMR 1226 xHD2 is compatible with a wide range of Garmin chart plotters, including many models in the GPSMAP 7x2/7x3, 9x2/9x3, 10x2, 12x2/12x3, and 84xx/86xx series.
    • Installation Considerations: The device should be mounted away from heat sources and magnetic compasses (check the compass-safe distance value in specifications). Ensure other electronics and cables are mounted at least 2 m (6.5 ft) away from the radar beam path.
    • Mounting Angle: The installation angle can be adjusted, sometimes with shims, on vessels with higher bow angles at cruise speed to point the beam slightly downward to the waterline while at rest.
    • Power Issues: If the device does not turn on, check the fuse in the power cable. Also, verify the device is receiving at least 12V DC power; if voltage drops when attempting to power on, try wiring it directly to a new power source.
    • System Reset: If the radar system or chart plotter becomes unresponsive, a soft reset can often fix the issue. For the chart plotter, you can often find a "Reset Default Settings" option in the system menu, which restores default configurations without removing user data.
    • Safety: To avoid possible personal injury, do not look directly at the antenna at close range when the radar is transmitting, as eyes are the most sensitive part of the body to electromagnetic energy.
