Garmin Cortex V1 VHF Radio with SOTDMA Smart AIS

Garmin Cortex V1 VHF Radio with SOTDMA Smart AIS isn't just a VHF radio; it is a complete communications hub that redefines safety and connectivity on the water. By integrating high-speed SOTDMA AIS, multi-station VHF, and remote vessel monitoring into one seamless system, Garmin has created a "command centre" that fits in the palm of your hand.

The Garmin Cortex V1 is the world’s first marine VHF with high-speed SOTDMA AIS transponder technology. This system consists of the M1 Hub—a powerful "black box" that can be tucked away—and the H1 tethered handset, featuring a stunning 4-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen.

What sets the Cortex apart is its smart AIS technology. Unlike standard AIS, Cortex proactively calculates collision risks and alerts you with intuitive voiced alarms. Instead of a generic beep, you’ll hear "Collision alert, Starboard Bow," allowing you to keep your eyes on the horizon rather than squinting at a screen.

When you’re away from the boat, the Cortex continues to work for you. With built-in sensors and cellular connectivity, you can monitor your bilge, battery levels, and location directly from your smartphone. It even includes a sophisticated Anchor Watch that alerts you if your boat drifts outside a set radius. At Morgan Marine, we recommend the Cortex V1 for any owner looking to simplify their helm while significantly upgrading their safety kit.

Garmin Cortex V1 VHF Radio with SOTDMA Smart AIS  Key Features

  • SmartAIS with SOTDMA Technology: Features Class B SOTDMA for faster updates and increased visibility to other vessels. The system proactively monitors for potential collisions and provides clear avoidance cues.
  • Intuitive Touchscreen Control: The H1 handset features a 4-inch, sunlight-viewable Gorilla Glass display that is fully functional even with wet hands or gloves.
  • Voiced Alerts: Forget ambiguous tones; Cortex uses clear voice prompts to identify threats and their direction, so you know exactly where to look.
  • One-Touch DSC Calling: Simply tap a vessel on the AIS plotter screen to initiate a Direct Sequence Call (DSC) instantly—no more manually typing in MMSI numbers.
  • Remote Vessel Monitoring: Monitor your boat’s vital signs (battery, bilge, security, and more) from anywhere in the world via the Cortex Monitor app.
  • Built-in Anchor Watch: Sleep soundly knowing the Cortex is tracking your position and heading. If your anchor drags, you’ll receive an immediate alert on your handset and smartphone.
  • Multi-Station Capability: Connect up to 10 handsets (wired or wireless) to a single hub, giving you full VHF and AIS control from the flybridge, cockpit, or cabin.
  • Rugged & Waterproof: The hub is IPX7 rated, while the handsets are IPX8 rated, ensuring they survive the harshest British coastal conditions.
  • Integrated Splitter: Includes a high-performance, no-loss splitter, allowing you to use your existing VHF antenna for both AIS and VHF functions.
  • Future-Proof Design: New features and enhancements are added via wireless software updates, ensuring your system stays at the cutting edge of marine technology.

Garmin Cortex V1 VHF Radio with SOTDMA Smart AIS  FAQs

What exactly is included in the Cortex V1 system?

The Cortex V1 is a complete package designed to get you up and running with advanced comms. In the box, you’ll receive the M1 Hub (the "brain" of the system), one H1 Tethered Handset, a handset cradle, a GPS antenna, and all the necessary power and audio cables. It’s a full VHF, Class B SOTDMA AIS transponder, and remote monitor in one.

What is "SOTDMA" AIS, and why does it matter?

Most standard AIS units use CSTDMA, which can sometimes struggle to find a "slot" to broadcast in busy areas like the Solent or near major ports. The Cortex V1 uses SOTDMA (Self-Organising Time Division Multiple Access)—the same technology used by commercial ships. This means your position is transmitted more frequently and with higher priority, ensuring you are seen faster by other vessels, even in congested waters.

Can I use the handset with gloves or when my hands are wet?

Absolutely. We know UK weather isn't always kind! The H1 handset features a 4-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen specifically engineered for the marine environment. It’s fully sunlight-readable and responds perfectly to wet hands or gloves. For those who prefer tactile control, there is also a dedicated click-wheel and buttons for one-handed operation.

How many handsets can I connect to one system?

The Cortex system is incredibly flexible. You can connect up to 10 handsets in total. Up to five can connect directly to the M1 Hub’s built-in Wi-Fi, and you can add another five if you integrate the system into your boat’s existing network. This is perfect for larger vessels where you might want a station at the helm, the flybridge, and the crew quarters.

Does it work with my existing Chartplotter?

Yes, it plays very nicely with others. The Cortex V1 features NMEA 2000® connectivity, allowing you to share AIS and GPS data with your existing Garmin chartplotters or other NMEA 2000-compatible MFDs. It also includes a built-in antenna splitter, so you can often use your existing VHF antenna for both the radio and the AIS.

What can I monitor remotely when I’m away from the boat?

Out of the box, the Cortex V1 allows you to monitor your boat’s position (Geo-fencing), battery voltage, and barometric pressure via the Cortex Monitor app. If you want more detail, you can connect external sensors to monitor bilge pumps, shore power, or security. It provides twice-daily updates for free, or you can opt for a Premium Subscription for real-time alerts and the ability to remotely turn on devices like lights or a fridge.

How does the "Anchor Watch" feature work?

This is a game-changer for peaceful nights at anchor. The Cortex combines high-precision GPS with its internal heading sensor to track your bow’s position, not just the hub's location. If your anchor drags and you move outside your set "swing radius," the system sounds an alarm on the handsets and sends a notification to your smartphone—even if you’re ashore having dinner.

Is the system difficult to install?

The "Black Box" M1 Hub is designed to be tucked away behind the console or in a locker, saving precious dash space. Because the handsets connect via Wi-Fi to the hub, you don't need to run complex thick cables all over the boat—just a power supply for the handset cradles.

Can I make a DSC call directly from the AIS screen?

Yes, and it's one of our favourite features. Instead of manually typing in an MMSI number, you can simply tap a vessel on the AIS plotter screen and hit 'Call'. This initiates an individual DSC call instantly, making communication in a potential collision situation much faster and less stressful.
