Garmin Compact Reactor 40 Hydraulic Autopilot with GHC 50 and Shadow Drive Technology Pack

Garmin Compact Reactor 40 Hydraulic Autopilot with GHC 50 and Shadow Drive Technology Pack combines Garmin’s most responsive autopilot system with the premium GHC 50 touchscreen display and the ingenious Shadow Drive™ valve. It is the ultimate entry-level solution for hydraulically steered boats less than 25 feet in length, providing commercial-grade reliability in a package built for the leisure boater.

The heart of this system is the solid-state 9-axis AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System). Unlike older fluxgate compasses, this advanced sensor allows the Reactor 40 to be mounted almost anywhere on your vessel, in any orientation. It constantly reacts to sea conditions—minimising heading error and reducing power consumption—so your boat stays on course even when pitching and rolling in heavy swells.

One of the standout features of this pack is the Shadow Drive technology. There’s no need to fumble with buttons if you need to make a sudden course correction. Simply turn the helm to take manual control; the Shadow Drive automatically disengages the autopilot. Once you have steadied onto your new heading and released the wheel, the system automatically re-engages, letting you get back to enjoying the journey.

Included in this bundle is the GHC 50 autopilot instrument. This bright, 5-inch touchscreen display brings a modern, premium feel to your dashboard. It’s not just a screen; it’s a hub that shares data and settings with your existing Garmin MFDs and networked devices, giving you seamless control of your heading from the helm.

Garmin Compact Reactor 40 Hydraulic Autopilot with GHC 50 and Shadow Drive Technology Pack FAQs

Is my boat compatible with the Compact Reactor 40?

This system is specifically designed for single-engine outboard boats that are less than 25 feet (approx. 7.6 metres) in length. It is an ideal "entry-level" solution for coastal cruising and moderate-to-high speed runs where you want relief from manually holding the wheel.

What exactly is "Shadow Drive™ Technology" and why do I need it?

Shadow Drive is a game-changer for safety and convenience. It allows you to take manual control of the helm instantly without pressing a single button to disengage the autopilot. Simply turn the wheel to manoeuvre around an obstacle; once you hold a steady course again, the autopilot automatically re-engages.

How does the GHC™ 50 touchscreen improve the experience?

The GHC 50 is Garmin’s premium 5-inch glass touchscreen display. It features a bright, anti-glare WVGA interface that makes it incredibly easy to engage the pilot or make course adjustments. It also shares data and settings with your other Garmin MFDs (Multi-Function Displays) via the NMEA 2000® network, creating a seamless "glass bridge" look at your helm.

Can I mount the Reactor 40 CCU anywhere?

Yes. Thanks to its solid-state 9-axis AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System), the CCU can be mounted almost anywhere on the boat and in any orientation. This flexibility is perfect for smaller boats where console space might be at a premium.

Does it perform well in rough British sea conditions?

Absolutely. The 9-axis AHRS technology allows the system to react to the sea rather than just the compass. Whether you’re pitching in a chop or rolling in a swell, the Reactor 40 remains incredibly responsive, minimising heading error and rudder movement to keep you on a straight line.

Is the installation and calibration difficult?

While we always recommend professional installation by our engineers here at the Brightlingsea boatyard to ensure your warranty and safety, Garmin has made the commissioning process remarkably simple. The "on-the-water" calibration is fast and intuitive, getting you out of the marina and onto the water much quicker than older systems.

Can I control the autopilot from my smartwatch?

Yes! If you have a compatible Garmin quatix® marine smartwatch or the Reactor autopilot remote, you can control your steering from anywhere on the boat. This is particularly useful if you’re fishing or moving around the cockpit.

Does it support Auto Guidance+™?

Yes, when paired with a compatible Garmin chartplotter and a valid Navionics+™ or Vision+™ subscription, you can use Auto Guidance+ to follow a suggested path through channels and around charted obstructions.

What if I have a larger boat or twin engines?

The Compact Reactor 40 is strictly for single-engine boats under 25ft. For larger vessels, twin outboards, or inboard engines, we stock the full-sized Reactor 40 series. If you’re unsure which model you need, please give our sales team a call on 01206 302003 and we can advise based on your specific hull and engine setup.
