Suzuki 9.9 HP Outboard Engine FAQs
What is the difference between the DF9.9A and the DF9.9B models?
The DF9.9A is our reliable, lightweight carburettor model—perfect for simple, cost-effective portability. The DF9.9B is the "next generation" engine. It features Suzuki’s world-first Battery-less Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). This means it starts easier (even after being stored), runs smoother, and is incredibly fuel-efficient thanks to the Lean Burn Control System. If you want the latest technology and better fuel economy, the "B" model is the way to go.
Which shaft length do I need: Short or Long?
This depends entirely on the height of your boat's transom (the back part where the engine sits):
-
- Short Shaft (S): Best for most inflatable boats (SIBs), tenders, and small dinghies. (Approx. 15 inches / 381mm).
- Long Shaft (L): Usually required for day boats, small sailing cruisers, or RIBs with a higher transom. (Approx. 20 inches / 508mm).
Tip: If you’re unsure, give us a call at the Morgan Marine office or bring your boat down to the yard and we’ll measure it for you!
Do I need a Battery-less EFI engine?
One of the biggest headaches for boaters is a carburettor gumming up after sitting for a few months. Because the DF9.9B uses EFI, it doesn't have a carburettor to clog. It also doesn't require a heavy lead-acid battery to start—the EFI system works off the pull-start alone. It’s a game-changer for reliability.
What exactly comes in the box?
When you buy your Suzuki 9.9hp from Morgan Marine, you get everything you need to get on the water:
-
- The engine itself (fully PDI'd by our technicians).
- An external 12-litre fuel tank and fuel line.
- A durable aluminium propeller.
- The toolkit and owner's manual.
Note: Remote models (BRL/BRS) also include the side-mount control box.
Is the 9.9hp portable enough for me to carry?
Yes! Suzuki has worked hard to keep these engines compact. The DF9.9A weighs in at roughly 39kg, while the EFI DF9.9B starts at about 44kg. Both feature a large, ergonomically designed carrying handle, making them manageable for two people to move or for one person to lift from a pontoon onto a transom.
Can I charge my electronics from this engine?
Yes, most models come with an integrated alternator. The manual start models typically offer a 12V 6A output, while the electric start versions offer up to 12V 10A. This is perfect for keeping a small battery topped up for your fishfinder or navigation lights.
How does the warranty work?
All new Suzuki engines purchased through an authorised dealer like Morgan Marine come with a 5-year leisure warranty (subject to terms and conditions). To keep the warranty valid, you just need to ensure the engine is serviced at the correct intervals by a Suzuki-authorised workshop.
Can I collect my engine in person?
Absolutely. While we offer fast shipping across the UK, many of our customers prefer to choose Click & Collect. This allows us to give you a full handover, show you the basic controls, and ensure you’re comfortable with the engine before you head out.
Is this engine suitable for saltwater use?
Yes. Suzuki uses a specially formulated Anti-Corrosion Finish. This multi-layer coating is applied directly to the aluminium alloy to protect the engine from the harsh North Sea conditions we see here in Brightlingsea.
