Lewmar Ocean Hatch
Lewmar Ocean Hatch are the gold standard for offshore sailing. Known globally for its classic styling and "overbuilt" ruggedness, it’s the definitive choice for boaters looking to replace tired deck hardware or upgrade to a truly watertight solution.
The Ocean Hatch isn’t just a window; it’s a high-performance piece of deck hardware designed for ultimate protection. Whether you are navigating the North Sea or a calm coastal estuary, its heavy-duty construction ensures that the elements stay exactly where they belong—outside.
Lewmar Ocean Hatch Key Features
Legendary Durability: Built with a thick, smoked-grey acrylic lens (up to 12mm on larger sizes) and a robust, anodised aluminium frame that resists saltwater corrosion for years of service.
Friction Lever Technology: No more struggling with stays or hinges. The integrated friction levers allow you to hold the lid open at any angle up to 95°, and the hatch can open a full 180° for easy access.
- Watertight Integrity: Featuring Lewmar’s unique integral seal system, these hatches are rigorously tested to remain completely leak-proof even in heavy weather.
- Security & Ventilation: Sizes 30 and larger come equipped with lockable internal and external handles. You can also lock the hatch in a "vent" position to allow airflow while keeping the vessel secure.
- Versatile Mounting: Available in both Flat Base (ideal for irregular surfaces) and Flanged versions (which allow for a neat internal trim kit finish).
- CE Approved: Fully certified for CE Area 2 (Deck, Coachroof, Cockpit, and Transom), ensuring it meets the highest safety standards for offshore use.
Comparison: Flat Base vs Flange
| Feature | Flat Base | Flange Base |

Lewmar Ocean Hatch FAQs
What is the difference between the "Flat Base" and "Flange Base" versions?
-
- Flange Base: This version has a protruding lip (flange) that drops down into the deck cutout. It is designed for boats with a deck thickness between 25mm and 70mm. If you want to install a Lewmar Trim Kit or Roller Shade later, you must choose the Flange version.
- Flat Base: As the name suggests, the base is flat and sits directly on the deck surface. These are ideal for thinner decks or where there isn't room for a flange.
Note: Flat base hatches are not compatible with internal Trim Kits or Roller Shades.
Can I leave the hatch partially open for ventilation?
Yes, absolutely. The Ocean Hatch features Lewmar’s clever friction levers. These allow you to hold the lid open at any angle up to 95° without the need for additional stays. If you want to let the breeze in while you're at anchor but keep the hatch secure, you can also use the handles to lock the hatch in a "ventilation position."
Is the Ocean Hatch "Ocean Rated" for offshore use?
It certainly is. All sizes in the Ocean range are CE Approved for Area 2A (Deck, Coach roof, Cockpit, and Transom). This makes them suitable for "Design Category A" craft—essentially boats intended for long voyages where conditions may exceed wind force 8 (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights of 4 metres.
How do I know which size I need for a replacement?
Lewmar hatches are heat-stamped with a code on the acrylic (usually between the right-hand handle and the edge). If your code starts with "SZ" (e.g., SZ60), it’s a Size 60.If you can't find a code, you’ll need to measure the Cut-out Dimensions (the hole in your deck) and the Overall Dimensions (the outside frame).
Can I replace the acrylic if it gets scratched or crazed?
One of the best features of the Ocean Hatch is that it uses Lewmar’s unique sealing system. This allows the acrylic lens to be replaced without having to remove the entire frame from the deck, saving you a massive amount of work in the long run.
What type of sealant should I use for instillation
You should use a high-quality marine-grade silicone sealant. It must have good adhesive properties and be compressible enough to allow the frame to pull down tight against the deck. Ensure your deck surface is flat within a tolerance of +/- 1mm to prevent the frame from distorting, which could cause the hatch to leak.
Does the hatch come with a flyscreen or internal trim?
The hatch itself does not include these as standard. However, if you purchase the Flange Base version, you can add a Lewmar Trim Kit (which finishes the inside of the cabin) and a Roller Shade (a combined flyscreen and blackout blind) as optional extras.
