Available Variants :

To help you choose the perfect power unit for your vessel, we have compiled a detailed breakdown of the Honda BF250 variants. These codes represent the different shaft lengths, rotations, and control systems available for the 2025 series.

In Honda’s coding:

"L", "X", and "U" refer to Transom Height: L (20 inch), X (25 inch), and U (30 inch). "R" denotes Mechanical remote control, while "D" denotes iST (Drive-by-wire). "C" signifies Counter-Rotation, essential for multi-engine setups to balance torque.

Model Code Control Type Transom Height Rotation Dry Weight*
LRU Mechanical 508mm / 20 in Standard 276 kg / 609 lbs
XRU Mechanical 635mm / 25 in Standard 284 kg / 626 lbs
XCRU Mechanical 635mm / 25 in Counter 284 kg / 626 lbs
URU Mechanical 762mm / 30 in Standard 289 kg / 637 lbs
UCRU Mechanical 762mm / 30 in Counter 289 kg / 637 lbs
LDU iST (Drive-by-wire) 508mm / 20 in Standard 278 kg / 613 lbs
XDU iST (Drive-by-wire) 635mm / 25 in Standard 286 kg / 631 lbs
XCDU iST (Drive-by-wire) 635mm / 25 in Counter 286 kg / 631 lbs
UDU iST (Drive-by-wire) 762mm / 30 in Standard 291 kg / 642 lbs
UCDU iST (Drive-by-wire) 762mm / 30 in Counter 291 kg / 642 lbs

Ownership & Peace of Mind:

Honda Marine has been powering the chase for over 60 years. The BF250 features significant quality improvements, including new oil pump and cylinder head gasket shapes to prevent corrosion, and a strengthened starter motor mount for consistent performance.

Maintenance is now simpler than ever with a repositioned oil filter to prevent messy drips and extended valve adjustment intervals, meaning you spend more time on the water and less at the dock.

Honda BF250 HP Outboard Engine FAQs

Is the Honda BF250 suitable for saltwater use?

Absolutely. Honda outboards are engineered for the harshest marine environments. The BF250 features a patented '4-Front' corrosion protection system—a multi-layered process involving a double-sealed treatment—and high-corrosion resistant aluminium alloys for critical interior components.

What is the difference between Mechanical (R) and iST (D) models?

Mechanical (LRU, XRU, etc.): These use traditional cable-actuated throttle and shift systems. They are robust, reliable, and often preferred by boaters who appreciate a direct, tactile feel.

What is iST / Drive-by-Wire (LDU, XDU, etc.):

This stands for Intelligent Shift and Throttle. It replaces cables with electronic signals for incredibly smooth shifting and precise throttle control. iST models also unlock advanced features like Cruise Control and Automatic Tilt.

What colour options are available?

The BF250 is available in two striking finishes: the classic Aqua Marine Silver and the modern Grand Prix White, allowing you to match the aesthetic of your hull perfectly.

What is Honda VTEC™ and how does it help me?

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Electronic Control) is Honda’s racing-derived technology. At higher RPMs, it switches to a more aggressive cam profile to give you a massive boost in top-end power, while maintaining smooth, fuel-efficient operation at lower speeds.

Will the BF250 get my boat on the plane quickly?

Yes, thanks to BLAST™ (Boosted Low Speed Torque). When you accelerate rapidly, the engine advanced the ignition timing to create more torque instantly. This gets you up and onto the plane much faster than traditional engines.

How fuel-efficient is this engine?

The BF250 features Lean Burn Control (ECOmo). When cruising at a steady speed, the engine automatically adjusts the air-fuel mixture to a "leaner" setting. This means you use significantly less fuel without sacrificing a knot of speed, extending your range for those long coastal trips.

Does it come with a propeller?

As with most high-performance outboards, propellers are sold separately. This is because the correct prop depends entirely on your specific boat's weight and intended use. Our team at Morgan Marine can help you calculate the perfect pitch and diameter for your setup.

Can I connect the engine to my existing GPS or Chartplotter?

Yes. The BF250 is NMEA 2000® compliant, meaning it uses a "plug and play" system to share engine data (like RPM, fuel flow, and temperature) directly with your compatible onboard electronics.

What is 'Counter-Rotation' and do I need it?

Counter-rotation models (indicated by a 'C' in the code, e.g., XCDU) are designed for twin-engine installations. One engine rotates clockwise and the other counter-clockwise to cancel out steering torque, keeping the boat balanced and easier to handle at high speeds.

What is the warranty coverage in the UK?

When you buy from an authorised dealer like Morgan Marine, you benefit from Honda’s industry-leading 6-Year Domestic Warranty (subject to following the service schedule). For commercial users, there is a 2-Year Warranty. Crucially, this is a "factory" warranty, not a third-party insurance policy, meaning you are covered directly by Honda.

Is maintenance difficult?

Honda has redesigned the V6 series for easier ownership. The oil filter is now positioned to prevent messy drips during changes, and many components are designed for easy access. To maintain your warranty, we recommend having your annual service performed here at our Brightlingsea service centre.

What kind of battery do I need? The BF250 is a powerhouse for electronics, featuring a 90-amp alternator. To support this, we recommend a high-quality marine battery with a minimum of 800 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) to ensure reliable starts and enough power for your onboard pumps and lights.
