Hempel Broads Antifouling Paint - 2.5L

Hempel Broads Antifouling is a self-polishing antifoul designed to deliver consistent, season-long protection for cruising boats. It gradually wears away as you move through the water, preventing fouling build-up and keeping your hull cleaner for longer.
Ideal for UK waters and suited to typical cruising speeds, it’s a solid, no-nonsense choice for boat owners who want performance without the fuss.
Suitable For:
- Glass fibre hulls
- Wooden boats
- Plywood
- Steel
Not suitable for aluminium or light-alloy hulls due to corrosion risk.
Why Choose Hempel’s Broads?
- Self-polishing formula helps maintain a smooth, efficient hull
- Strong mechanical durability for improved crack resistance
- Good colour retention throughout the season
- Trusted brand performance in a straightforward, easy-to-apply coating
A cleaner hull means better fuel efficiency, smoother cruising, and less mid-season scrubbing. That’s time saved and hassle avoided. If you’re preparing for the season ahead and want an antifoul that delivers consistent protection without overcomplicating things, Hempel’s Broads is a dependable option.
Colours may vary slightly once applied. For best results, always follow Hempel’s surface preparation and application instructions.

Hempel Broads Surface Preparation Guide
Good antifouling starts with good preparation. Skip this stage and even the best paint won’t perform as it should. Here’s how to get it right.
Step 1: Clean the Hull Thoroughly
Before applying antifouling, make sure the surface is completely clean.
- Remove salts, detergents and surface contaminants
- Wash away slime and marine growth
- Use high-pressure fresh water cleaning for best results
A clean surface gives your antifoul the best possible bond, and that means better performance all season.
New Hull Application
If you’re applying antifouling to a new or bare surface:
- Prime the prepared surface with Hempel Light Primer
- Apply a tie coat of Hempel Underwater Primer while the primer is still tacky
- Then apply your Hempel’s Broads antifouling
Proper priming ensures adhesion and long-term protection below the waterline.
Maintenance & Repainting
If the hull has existing self-polishing or traditional antifouling:
- High-pressure fresh water clean
- Remove any loose material or contamination
- Allow the surface to dry fully
If the existing coating is sound and well adhered, you can overcoat directly after preparation.
If the hull has hard matrix antifouling or the existing type is unknown:
- High-pressure wash
- Wet abrade the surface
- Remove all sanding dust
- Ensure the hull is clean and dry before painting
If the previous antifouling is in poor condition, apply one coat of Hempel’s Underwater Primer to seal before applying fresh antifoul.
When to Strip Back Completely
If the existing antifouling is flaking, heavily built up, or generally in bad condition, the best solution is to remove old coatings entirely and re-prime before applying antifouling.
It takes more effort upfront, but it prevents adhesion problems and uneven performance later.
