Garmin Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot With Stainless Steel Tilt Tube
Garmin Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot With Stainless Steel Tilt Tube are specifically engineered for boats with small petrol outboard motors.
This particular version includes the Stainless Steel Tilt Tube, a vital upgrade for any angler operating in UK coastal or brackish waters. Standard mild steel tubes are prone to corrosion, which can seize your steering actuator; this stainless steel alternative ensures long-term reliability and protects your investment.
The Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot is your "extra pair of hands" on deck. Designed for outboard motors up to 20HP (and compatible with many up to 25HP), it allows you to step away from the tiller to prep tackle, net a fish, or simply enjoy the view without drifting off course.
Whether you are battling the unpredictable currents of the English Channel or the winds of the Lochs, the Reactor 40 uses its advanced solid-state 9-axis AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System) to keep you on a steady heading. The system integrates seamlessly with your existing Garmin setup, or can be operated as a standalone unit using the included floating handheld remote.
Garmin Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot With Stainless Steel Tilt Tube Key Features
- Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Steel Tilt Tube: Specially included to withstand harsh saltwater environments, preventing the rust and seizing common with standard factory-fitted tubes.
- Precision Heading Hold: Advanced 9-axis AHRS technology keeps you on track even in heavy chop, wind, or strong currents.
- Easy Throttle Control: Fine-tune your speed or drop to idle instantly at the touch of a button—perfect for when you’re about to land a catch.
- Floating Handheld Remote: Control your steering and throttle from anywhere on the boat. If it goes overboard, don't worry—it floats and features a sunlight-readable display.
- Seamless Integration: Fully compatible with Garmin chartplotters via the NMEA 2000® network, allowing you to control the autopilot directly from your helm's touchscreen.
- Designed for Kicker Motors: Tailor-made for small petrol outboards, making it the ideal companion for fishing vessels and sailboats alike.

Garmin Reactor 40 Kicker Autopilot With Stainless Steel Tilt Tube FAQs
What exactly does the "Stainless Steel Tilt Tube" version include?
This specific package is designed for kicker motors that require a steering actuator to be mounted through the tilt tube. Garmin mandates that this actuator must be installed in a stainless steel tilt tube to prevent corrosion and seizing. If your outboard currently has a mild steel tube, this kit provides the high-quality stainless steel replacement needed to ensure your autopilot operates smoothly for years to come.
Which outboard motors is this autopilot compatible with?
The Reactor 40 Kicker is purpose-built for small petrol outboard motors up to 20 horsepower. It is a favourite for anglers using "kicker" motors for trolling. It is compatible with most major brands, including Yamaha, Honda, Mercury, and Suzuki, provided they have a tilt tube configuration.
Can I control the autopilot from my Garmin Chartplotter?
Yes, absolutely. One of the best features of the Reactor 40 is its full integration with the Garmin ecosystem. If you have a compatible NMEA 2000® Garmin chartplotter (such as the ECHOMAP or GPSMAP series), you can engage the autopilot, follow a route, or adjust your heading directly from your screen.
Do I need a GHC™ helm control display?
While you can control the unit via a compatible Garmin chartplotter, many of our customers prefer having a dedicated GHC 20 or GHC 50 helm control for immediate physical access. If your boat doesn't have a Garmin plotter, a GHC display is required to commission and operate the system.
What is "AHRS" and why does it matter?
The Reactor 40 uses a solid-state 9-axis Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS). In simple terms, this is a highly advanced electronic compass and gyro system. It allows the autopilot to react to waves, wind, and current much faster than traditional systems, keeping you on a dead-straight course even in choppy UK coastal waters.
Can I use the autopilot while the boat is in reverse?
The Reactor 40 Kicker is primarily designed for forward-motion trolling and navigation. While it provides industry-leading performance going forward, it is not intended for use while the motor is in reverse.
Is it difficult to install?
The kit is comprehensive, but it does require NMEA 2000 networking and mechanical integration with your outboard. Garmin recommends professional installation to ensure the AHRS is calibrated correctly and the tilt tube is fitted securely. If you're local to Brightlingsea, our team at Morgan Marine can certainly handle the installation for you.
Can I control the autopilot wirelessly?
Yes! You can add an optional Garmin Autopilot Remote or even use a compatible Garmin quatix® marine watch to steer your boat from anywhere on deck—perfect for when you’re busy with the fishing lines at the stern.
Does it include a throttle control?
No, this system controls the steering of the motor. If you require remote throttle and shift control, you would typically look at a separate digital throttle system or a mechanical actuator, though most of our customers find that setting the throttle manually and letting the Reactor 40 handle the steering is the perfect balance for trolling.
